Had a great afternoon at Nagymama’s place yesterday. At 92 she’s still going strong, albeit a little immobile. The ancient Hungarian tradition of showing the baby from NZ to all the neighbours was dutifully performed, prior to some fab Hungarian cuisine including wild boar and mushroom stew, which had been recently caught by Marti’s boyfriend…of course they did a tofu version for Sarah, which I have to say tasted nearly as good. Nagy and Eva couldn’t get enough of Kaspar, and he was on form for nearly 4 hours before a minor melt down and falling asleep on dad. Spent the next morning at (or in transit to) www.szoborpark.hu, an outdoor area that houses some of the finest, and seemingly most bizarre tributes to communism from the streets of post-1956 Budapest. It feels unimagineable today, but ... read more

Headed to the Market Hall (which is literally around the corner) first thing this morning to get some fresh supplies. This hall has been used since the 19th century to sell any manner of fresh produce and is packed with meat, fish, fruit, veges, grains, breads, cheese, etc on the ground floor. On the first floor you can buy Hungarian hand crafts and cool stuff like knives and whips, and the Hungarian version of a food court. If you come to Hungary you must try a langos, covered in garlic butter and sour cream, and washed down with a beer - the breakfast of champions! Despite the Market Hall opening at 6am we were a bit too keen and most of the stalls had not set up yet by 7am, so we detoured down to the ... read more

Cousin Marti picked us up from the airport in Budapest yesterday and incredibly we managed to fit all of Kaspar’s stuff in the car. It took mere seconds before we were reminded of the manical driving that Hungarians are famous for. Lovin' it! The family here sorted us an apartment in the middle of town which is just perfect. Its just around the corner from Raday Utca (Raday Street) which is a pedestrian only area full of bars and restaurants. Its walking distance from the river and the centre of town - a great place to be based and easy to get around from. Kaspar was keen to check out the local sights and sounds as soon as possible so we went for a walk along the river this morning. I've been to Budapest 5 or ... read more

So after the enlightening experience that was Bratislava we happily jumped on a train to the bright lights and happy times of Budapest, capital of all things Hungary. Arriving (unsurprisingly) to piss poor weather we trekked with our packs for 3km to the hostel at which we called home for a few days, the Caterina Hostel. After walking up and down the same street several times we eventually found the right door only to then discover another small issue with the accomodation- it was on the third floor and was precisely 118 steps up. No lift. Of course. After discussıng numerous ways of getting not only our bags but ourselves up this monstrous flight of stairs without having to actually walk up them (ie, getting some sort of pulley system working, finding stray dogschildren to carry ... read more

so, after two nights in prague its off the european capital of all things grey, Bratislava. but first a story. i am very tired today, mainly for one reason. its not beer either you clever so and so. we had an ungodly early bus to bratislava, meaning we had to leave the hostel at 6.45 am. for those who know me they wqill know how much i love to get up in a morning. for those that dont trust me on this, solving third world debt is easier than waking me up. so i take pity on poor old travalpal joel and stay up wandering around prague all night despite being tired as it was. this worked fine until about 6.30 am when, having lost all track of time i realise i have 15 mins to ... read more

Aww... Budapest. I had a really great time in Budapest and I think it was due mostly to the interesting things we did and the events that we can look back on now and laugh at (although at the time they weren't quite as funny). Unfortunately our entire time in Budapest was met with cloudy skies and the occasional rainfall... although the city itself was very interesting because of the unique architecture and city layout, niether of these attributes can be as memorable as our personal interractions there. The train to Budapest was the closest train ride I've had to a nightmare since we've been on the road. I'm pretty sure these people time their passport and ticket checks to coincide perfectly with the exact moment you find a perfect sleeping position and begin your first ... read more

I think it's important to at least pay lip service to the past when visiting countries that had to endure totalitarian rule and Budapest suffered under the cruel might of communism along with the rest of Russia's soviet satellites. If you don't fancy taking in a museum then you can always marvel at the many bullets holes that ghoulishly pock mark the facia's of the city's older buildings, it will suffice. If you do feel obliged to dig a little however (and I do) then 'The Museum of Terror' could be the place for you. This prewar tenement was first the residence of Budapest's Nazi party and then, once the Russians had pushed the Germans back far enough, it subsequently became the Communist Party's headquarters. All sinister stuff then and the curators have done their utmost ... read more

I like European complimentary breakfasts. The best I ever had was at a small hotel in the medievel town of Voltera in Tuscany. The juice was fresh (not from concentrate), the meat procurred locally I'm sure, the bread and croissants of perfect consistency and the coffee was brewed to perfection. It raised the breakfast bar and even though most continental breakfasts do not come close to such exceptional Italian standards they still normally do the job. And 'do the job' it did at the Hotel Pest. It was certainly a lot better than the fare offered in the Hotel Kafka in Prague north of Hungary's boarder and without such pleasing nutrition it would have taken a pretty while to really start the day. The hangover imbued from the previous nights drinking was pretty brutal but by ... read more

well, it is taking some adjusting for me to get used to walking on hungarian streets. a man in a car stoped for me and waved me to walk- i was shocked but then remembered i wasnt in russia anymore. for anyone thinking of traveling to hungary, you should know- everyone cooks lunch from very early in the morning but there are few places to get breakfast. the turkish deli marts were open earlier than the cafes! we ended up having breakfast at mcdonalds- who, by the way, had an amazing cafe section with a decadent cappuccino!! i met a man from ethiopia who i will hopefully meet up with when i come back to budapest before i leave for home. all the snow has melted, which has caused a lot of floods in eastern europe. ... read more

Hi all, My last day in Budapest was just relaxing with nothing exciting that went on. I was going to go a traditional Turkish bath and try that out, but when I got to the building, I was more in the mood to explore the city, so I did just that. I ended up walking the length of the Danube River, which is getting higher every day. At one point this thing is going to recede and reveal the entire 4 lane street and pedestrian walkway to the world, but right now, those are lost in a sea of water. It started to rain in the city today, so after satisfying my urge to explore with no new discoveries, I headed back to the hostel and ended up going out for dinner with a few other ... read more
