Well it has been a while since I have updated my blog! Maybe a little too long but I assure you lot's has happened, so if you've been waiting for an entry, get ready for a long one!!! Christmas here was good! We decorated the tree on Christmas eve, then put the presents underneath, then opened them right after! I sang at a Christmas eve mass here in Budapest (all in english though...) and then we came home and had fish soup which was surprisingly really good! I had heard a few horror stories about this fish soup, some that the head and eye balls were left in the soup and while my host mom was making it I asked her (probably sounding slightly concerned) if she left them in as well and she said no... ... read more

Our train from Vienna arrived in Budapest around 8PM on Tuesday. We were supposed to arrive earlier but our train was stopped somewhere just over the Hungarian border for over an hour! The conductor made a few announcements in German and then said in English that “the police were coming.” It wasn’t too big of a scene but we were curious as to what was going on. Police came and were looking under the tracks with flashlights. We assumed that it had to do with some kind of vandalism, but we never found out what the deal was. We were sitting there for so long though, I was so relived when the train finally started moving again! After we got to Budapest we took the train to our hostel, called “the 11th hour.” I really ... read more

The herald of the fifth portion of Rachels Tour de Europe came with the arrival of her long-time friend, Kristen French. Kristen hails from Boulder, Colorado and the two met while studying abroad in Wollongong, Australia. With nostalgia for long discussions over steeping tea, and a disenchantment for the real world, Kristen spontaneously bought a plane ticket and the two decided to meet in Hungary. Two weeks later, Rachel arrived at the Budapest airport holding a sign conspicuously advertising the slogan, "Hungary for Love". Many recent arrivals in the airport looked curiously at the sign, attempting to decipher whether it was a Cancer Treatment Organization or an Escort Service. In reality, the slogan was the result of eight hours on a bus and an overactive imagination. The two decided it would be a theme for ... read more

Just outside the parliment building is a memorial to those who were killed in the unsuccessful uprising against the Communist government in 1956. The uprising was crushed and at least 30,000 people in Budapest were killed. Western nations and the UN had made promises to help, but failed to follow through on those promises. The flag that flies at the memorial has a circle cut out of its center symbolizing the hoped for removal of Soviet power from Hungary... read more

I arrived in Budapest in the morning and headed straight to the hostel to meet up with my friends. We decided to start the day off by hiking up to Gellert Hill. After the coronation of King Stephen, the first Christian Hungarian monarch, the Pope sent Bishop Gellert to convert the Magyars. Budapest’s principal hill was named Gellerthegy after those unconvinced by the bishop’s message hurled him to his death from the summit. The Liberation Monument, which honours Soviet soldiers who died ridding Hungary of Nazis, overlooks the Budapest from the hilltop. It was raining the whole time we hiked up, but it was still a good time and I am glad we did it. We then decided that since it wasn’t such a nice day out that we should do something inside and do ... read more

A word of advice to all bloggers - do your writing as soon as possible after travelling. I remember the sights of Budapest very well, but names and details are a bit sketchy as I have left it too long. Hopefully the pics will make up for it - but this is going to be short and sweet. There's something about Budapest. I've visited several times and will go again. Known as the 'Paris of Eastern Europe', I travelled a few times from Vienna by train - 2.5 hours. There's a lot of talk of the railway station being a bit dodgy and there are people hanging around asking if you have a hotel. If staying in Budapest, it is probably best to get one before arriving. Upon arrival, the underground is very easy to use ... read more

Chris: “Hi there, I think there’s been a mistake with the departure board… where do we check-in for the Malev Airways flight to Budapest?” Bored looking airport information guy: “oh that… down there a few hundred metres, past all those proper check-in desks, turn a corner and it’s just there… next to the abandoned pot plants and dusty wheelchairs” Well at least the check-in line was short… Anna: “Chris, we are going on a real plane aren’t we? Not one of those %$^£” pencils with wings?” Chris: “Of course, you worry too much. You’ve gotta get over this ‘small plane’ issue.” The concealed check-in desk should have been a giveaway. The real plane turned out to be a little Fokker. No I’m not being rude. It was a Fokker 70 - a plane that has its ... read more

During the week nothing happened. I was just studying, studying and studying. Becaus I had an exam from my home university on Friday. Sadly it was strange and not very good, also for my friends in germany, so I'm quite sure to do it again in summer. But the main part is that it is over now and I had to make party now. On Friday I was on the Meet-Your-Mentor-Party in West Balkan. I better blog nothing here. Also if you want to know how it was, write me personally. But it was a nice weekend Magda and her flatmate visited me and on Saturday she cooked Pasta for us. Later we went with a lot of students from Debrecen to any Pub. But not to long because we had to get up before 7 ... read more

We stayed at the Red Bus hostel in Pest, right next to the Redlight district, but it was a really nice residential area just off the main shopping road. The hostel also owned an English bookstore in Central Budapest where we stocked up on books at bargain prices! On our first day we wandered out of our hostel towards Heroes Square, which is lined with huge statues and monuments. The square backs onto the main city Park, which is huge and holds a lake, and open air ice-skating rink and Pest Castle. The castle is beautiful, like something out of a fairytale with towers and cobbled courtyards. It also has a moat surrounding it where we sat on deckchairs soaking up the amazing sunshine! From there we wandered down Andrassy Avenue, the UNESCO protected main street ... read more
