Well I won't write too much here cos I've told you all about my trip in the group email. But I'll just say that Budapest really is a beautiful city! The people are really friendly, and even though not many people speak much english, they knew enough for us to get around no probs, and it's always more fun when not everyone can speak english! :P I've put some pics up, so i hope you like them! I seriously got so excited by the view down on the Danube River the first time i saw it at night that i took about 60 photos then decided that was probably a little excessive so had to delete a lot! haha, but it really is so gorgeous. I've also put some up from the little town i visited ... read more

Let me clarify something really quick. My recent trip to Budapest was among the best trips I have had this far in Europe. However, there were a few times I had to ask myself "Why did I come here?" Usually, I was answered by something incredibly sweet, like spectacular views and a new understanding of our favourite Hungarian authors. However, there are still serious scars in Budapest from the various wounds inflicted upon Hungarian history. Hungary has a long history of foreign invasions and occupations, starting with the Mongols in 1247, the Ottomans in the 16th century, immediately followed by the Habsburg Austrians until 1848 when they were granted a semi-independant status, and then after their collapse in 1918, by the Nazis in the 40s, and immediately following that by the Communists until recently. As with ... read more

Szervusztok from Hungary!! I recently got back from a trip to Eastern Europe. A good thing about the frenchies is that they take a lot of vacations and time off!! Teachers work an average of 18 hours a week and usually have three day weekends If the grueling work week is too much to handle the government gladly secures several national holidays in which everything is closed down; this includes all public forms of transportation!! I have had some trying experiences recently; it is a story that will be told at a later date, when the steam is burned off! I took advantage of the generous amount of time off and took a trip to the capitals of Hungary and the Czech Republic with Katie and Kelly. We thought we were so savvy in securing a ... read more

Got up at 7:00 next morning to go sightseeing. I wanted to get in for a tour of parliament house but couldn’t because of the stupid riots in the previous weeks. I decided I didn’t need to jump on the tour bus because I had seen half of the sights from the outside anyway, and a big remaining drawcard was the tour of parliament which wasn’t happening anyway. I checked out Heroes Square, which has statues of famous Hungarians who played a major role in the country’s history. Nearby there’s the remains of a castle which was cool, has a real Lord of the Rings feel about it. Next to it was an ice rink with little kids all learning to skate, looked like they were having a lot of fun. I also had to catch ... read more

Train arrived from Vienna about 13:00, sorry the correct train arrived about 12:40, but I wasn’t paying attention as I was starting to pack things in the train and just looked up and saw a “K” at the start of the name of the station so jumped out. It was then that I realised no one else had gotten off the train. The place looked like some kind of wasteland like you see in movies set in a desolate near future. It was like Mad Max but not in the desert. I felt like I had landed in the set of “Hostel” and got worried when I couldn’t see any signage and the voice over the PA was rather scary and completely unintelligible. It sounded like the bloke smoked a thousand cigarettes a day, but as ... read more

The first night we ventured out to a nearby palacsinta place for a quick bite. Palacsintas are similar to crepes and can be sweet or savory depending on the filling. We had ham and mushroom in one, chocolate and vanilla pudding with whipped cream for the other. Prices were very reasonable, with the total with drinks coming in at around $5. Breakfast each day at our pension consisted of the standard hot chocolate, cereal and yogurt along with salami, ham, and cheese mini-sandwiches on hot dog bun shaped rolls. One day we stopped at a pastry stand for a little snack: a delightful cream cheese filled pastry and apple pastry managed to "kill our appetites" as they say here. We had dinner last night at a great fish restaurant recommended by our hosts. We started off ... read more

J's paternal Grandmother is very proud to be Hungarian so we wanted to check out Budapest on this trip! Arriving at the airport and getting to our hotel had a similar feeling to it as when we arrived in Prague last year . We were told by the innkeeper that a private taxi company would be waiting for us with our name on a signboard when we came out of baggage claim. This much was true. The man ushered us outside to the curb and said in very poor English "wait here." He then disappeared back into the airport without further explanation. He left us right next to a sign which read "reserved taxi pick up area." Within a couple of minutes, a taxi pulled up displaying the name of the same taxi company. The driver ... read more

Well from Vienna it was over to Budapest!!! I think the journey was about 4 hours this time, as we travelled through the countryside my mind wandered through countless thoughts and ideas, none I can really remember at the moment! I think its just that travel thing when you are so used to long journeys your mind just gets used to wandering! Anyway, got into the Pest side of Budapest. For those unaware Budapest is made of of one side of the Danube River (the hilly side) being Buda, and the west side, or flat side being Pest. I got a bus trolley to my accommodation, called the Boomerang Hostel (of all things in Budapest?) and just veged out there for most of the evening. After having a dorm room all to myself ... ah yes!!!!! ... read more

So we attempted a daytrip to budapest today and were semi successful in that we made it there really easily the only problem was that i thought since it is south, it was going to be warm.. boy was i wrong. all i wore was a longsleeved shir and jeans, i was freezing my butt off. It must have been 2 degrees C outside and there was a really nice breeze coming off the danube that made it even colder. It really was a shame because i think that if i had been warm, i really would have enjoyed budapest because it is split up into two parts, buda and pest which are separated by the danube river, we were on the new side of pest and all the architecture looked really old and neat so ... read more
