I’ve been accused of sounding like Rick Steves in my blogs so I’m attempting to find a new writing voice. Bear with me…. This is absolutely my favourite stop! Budapest just feels good. And I’m so sorry I didn’t have/make time for one of the bath houses that it is so famous for. Then again, visiting one of those may have ruined me for the other spa I frequent. Maybe this was a good thing…no…it wasn’t. My first night in town I took advantage of an after-dark tour of the city. This included a trip to the top of Gellert Hill and afforded me the opportunity for a great night shot of the city from above. The place was packed though. A traffic jam of cars, people and tour buses. Luckily our tour director was there ... read more

It never ceases to amaze me… the scope of the Roman Empire. From Portugal on the Atlantic to Romania on the Black Sea, someone who speaks one of the romance languages can essentially get by. All the languages are that similar. Truly a legacy of the power and influence of the Roman Empire. Quite a heavy police presence, though. They’re mostly parked on the side of the road. I was lucky and avoided detection… hehehehe Budapest is amazingly beautiful. The architechture is flabergasting. So much is lost on modern architecture, though. In reality, nowadays, I don’t think they could afford the craftsmanship that went into these old buildings… sigh. Hungary is truly in a state of transition. You’ll see the latest Porsche pulled up alongside a thirty year old Trabant at a stop light. They seem ... read more

Aaaahhh.... Budapest. Home to the impressive Heroes' Square, the relaxing thermal baths, spectacular views from the Royal Palace on the Varhegy (Castle Hill)... and a heap of other things we didn't get to see because we ran out of time. I was disappointed not to see the roman ruins of Obuda, the park of now homeless communist monuments, Margaret Island in the centre of the Danube and some of the many, many museums throughout the city. Cathy and I flew in really late last Thursday night and managed to get ourselves to the hostel.... which was not quite the quality place I was hoping for. It was fine there that night but after that I got a total of six hours sleep over the next two nights thanks to the snoring Aussie bloke on the Friday ... read more

Szentendre is a little town 19 km north of Budapest. Since it was easy accessible by suburban train, we decided to visit it. It was a quite picturesque city known for its well-preserved houses and churches. We bought some souvenirs and made a walk on the promenade dike near the river.... read more

When I looked back at our trip to Budapest, I have to admit that one of the first things I thought about, were the tasty cakes you can find everywhere. There was also a very nice market where we ate in open air.... read more

Nagycsarnok is the largest indoor market in Budapest. The market itself has a lot of stalls on three floors. Plenty of locals buy here their fruit vegetables, meat,... They even sell living fish! Hungarian specialities such as Hungarian goose liver (pate versions too), Hungarian wine, dried mushrooms, paprika powder... can be found here. You can even buy souvenirs here and other things at a much cheaper price compared to the shops in Váci Utca. The place was renovated for the millenium in 1996. The roof was restored to have colorful Zsolnay tiling.... read more

Budapest is a beautiful city to explore by foot. One of the first things we came across was the statue of the Little Princess (Kiskiralylany Szobor). The Széchenyi Chain bridge was the first permanent bridge between Buda and Pest across the Danube. The bridge was opened in 1849 and everyone -even the nobility (previously exempt from all taxation)- had to pay a toll to use it. From the bridge we had a great view on the Parliament. Matthias Church was the second largest church of medieval Budapest. It now has a diamond pattern roof tiles and gargoyles laden spire. Fisherman's Bastion is a terrace situated on the Buda bank of Budapest. Though it seems much older, it is built in 1905. There are seven turrets representing the Magyar tribes who entered the Carpathian Basin in the ... read more

Ahhh, Budapest. I've been here for nearly 6 days so far. I've absolutely fallen in love with this city. When I made plans to come here, I had no idea how lovely it would be. Gus arrived mid-week and we've been taking in the city by bus and boat (and eating a helluva lot of doner kebabs). I had an incredible time on the river cruise which took off on the Danube at about 9:30pm. The Buda Castle, Freedom Statue, Parliament and other major sights and bridges were illuminated by lights. Breathtaking! Yesterday, we spent the afternoon at the Gellert Spa, which channels the hot thermal springs from the ground. The Gellert Spa is supposedly the most famous of all the spas in Budapest. We didn't want to leave. In addition to a wave pool and ... read more

I think this has to be the largest concert I've ever attended. In the city park Budapest, there is a large area designed for use as a stage. For the last three years Westel - one of Hungary's mobile telephone providers has paid for a promotional concert in the park. Joe Cocker and Elton John were the previous years stars. This year Sting. Free to attend and promoted like crazy all over Hungary the concert was always going to be busy - but I've never seen anything like it, I'm waiting for statistics but rumours of 400,000 or more people are flying about at the moment, I could believe more. I never even got close enough to the stage to actually physically see the stars with my own eyes. Sara and I only managed to get ... read more

You could describe my time in Budapest as a bit of a rollercoaster. So far, things are going great. We have been climbing and climbing and climbing, and we still can't see the top. But that is the beautiful of a rollcoaster. You don't know when you will reach the top, you don't know what is on the other side, and you don't know which way it will pull you. I was about to find out. The crew woke up Sunday and tried to get around early, to limited, and I mean limited, success. We finally made it out to the Citadel in the early afternoon. From the view on top, we could see all of Budapest, and it was magnificent. Josh and I got some really amazing photos. Afterwards, we headed down to Grappa to ... read more
