I don't know what I expected of budapest but it's not like i expected.  It's really cool though but so huge and our hostal is miles from the center..but we still walked the whole way and got to see tons of the local stuff i guess. It reminds me of an american city.  That is the side of the city called Buda which is more subrhan and mellow.  Pest is the more city like side.  Well we're having fun and tommorrow we have plently more to see here.... read more

So, I survived Prague, barely some might say. My next stop was what some people described to me as Prague without the tourists. After staying in Budapest for a couple of weeks I certainly would not agree with that assessment. I throughly enjoyed the city, and Hungarian wine. But it was here that I also lost my traveling companions and had to strike out on my own, if only for a bit. So, enjoy. When I last wrote you, the Denmark Jam Band(minus our rhythm guitarist, John, who wanted to stay in Prague one more day; and our cracked out back-up singer, Anni, for obvious reasons) was struggling to make it to Budapest. We did, but just barely. I sat next to a Hungarian man on the bus who had lived in Germany for thirty years ... read more

I’m backlogging some of my previous travels in Europe from when I was in high school and college. They won’t contain much information as it was a while ago, but I would be more than happy to share my experiences with anyone who has a question. My third favorite city in Europe. It is a fantastic city for backpackers; plenty of places to stay (I liked the Yellow Submarine personally), cheap food, good bars, nice parks, clean streets, beautiful architecture and the waterfront is one of the best. The locals aren’t exactly the friendliest, but once you get past the Eastern European roughness, they are fantastic. I had friends who were living there at the time, but it would be easy to do solo. ... read more

On the banks of the Danube in the North of Hungary lie the twin cities of Buda and Pest. Together they form the capital Budapest, pronounced Boo-dapesht locally. Budapest is a beautiful city, the centre strangely reminiscent of London, due to the impressive 19th century architecture straddling the banks of a large river, crossed by many bridges. The Danube flows north to south, with Buda on the west bank and Pest on the east. Looking up from the river banks to Buda, a ridge of hills follows the river. On the top of the ridge Castle Hill sits the Royal Palace, the historical home of the Hungarian royal family. Close to the Pest bank stand today’s power centres, the parliament and the central district. With a population of 2 million, Budapest dwarfs every other city in ... read more

It was such a long train from Zagreb, so we were desperate and miserable when we put our packs on and walked out into the rain, and so when Zig approached us with his wiry beard and severe eyes and perfect English, I agreed to follow him around the corner of the station to a seedy cab, already a mistake, and then to the hostel he worked for, which was legit, but that was also an old Soviet-style university on summer break, where we'd just sleep in the dorm rooms, and there was a bar in the basement where Zig arrived and complimented Steph's appearance profusely, buying me drinks and watching me drink them, then insisting that we dance to Guns and Roses; we were the only couple on the dance floor, trying to plan an ... read more

At the airport, a driver with a Mercedes is waiting for us. Nice. There is cold drizzle when we venture out of our hotel cubbyhole, the Ibis Centrum, so we comfort ourselves with a fine lunch at El Caramel, one of the new, cool places on fashionable Raday Utca. My thick creamy mushroom soup was a perfect warm up and my eggplant sandwich on a perfectly smooth crispy roll, hit the spot. Our waitress knows just enough English to get her job done (typical of Hungarian establishments). The thermal baths/spas that city is known for, have no use for English either, so we stumble through. After a nap, we are ready for dinner at nearby Calvin on Kalvin Ter, a well-known square in downtown Pest. The fettuccine with chicken in a fine cream sauce (about $4.50 ... read more

EL DANUBIO... ¿AZUL?

The Hot Baths in Budapest are the best. $8 full body massages. You can't beat that. We went two days in a row. My other vibrant memory from Hungary happened when we were out at a club dancing. They played older music, and everyone sang along while they danced. The knew the words even if they didn't know what they meant. I'm telling you, you just haven't lived until you heard a room full of Hungarian men sing "It's raining men." ... read more
