We stayed at a hostel in Budapest called "Mellow Mood", and unfortunately David and I couldn't get a double room. I was in a four person dorm, and I never once saw my roomies. We had to set out straight away to meet our walking tour. On the tour was: a really rud Aussie woman (who called Amsterdam "Drug City" straight to Dutch people), and three girls that I'd seen on Busabout before (one has alopecia), and a guy named Jarrod, and a few others. Our guide was a really pretty Hungarian girl. David and I were hot and hungry, and while I'm glad that we did it because we saw quite a lot of Budapest, I don't really remember any of it now. I didn't know anything about the city when I began the tour, ... read more

Sorry that I havent written in a while... I have been so busy. What can I say about the music festival? it was really cool, cheap and I got to see a lot of really cool bands. I had to leave a little early because I couldnt take it anymore, needed time to detox. Went to Slovenia and thought that it was really nice and it was good to get out of a big city and into something smaller. I stayed it the capital for a two days and then got invited to go camping in the country side with these 3 irish girls i met on the train from budapest. Stayed at this lake that had a really big castle in the middle that you could swim out to. Really nice and peaceful. Left Bled ... read more

Finally reached Hungary!! Long loooong flight it turned out to be. Due to flight delays I didn’t get more than 30 minutes in transit..which was great. Got here on 16th morning and staying in a university hostel, 2 minutes away from Danube :)). Budapest has that feel to it...you know chaos amidst orderliness!!. Ate as soon as I got here in a dingy underground place…Mexican chillies and tortillas and all sorts of mixtures. Trams seem to be big here..along with metro buses and suburban trains. Already traveled ticketless once!! Went around exploring around the city, walking along the Danube..yes yes its as romantic as the books say. Hey and plenty of cobblestone streets and as always there are numerous old museums, churches and castles. Surprisingly, there seems to be too many emergencies, with ambulance and police ... read more

I couldnt be luckier, just as i get to Budapest, theres a music festival starting. Bands from all over the world come to play for 8 days. i was only there for one day, so i didnt have a chance to see Basement Jaxx or The Wailers who were among the many playing. sorry reggae fans, i know thats a rasta foul but i didnt have a choice. the setting, an island within the danube river that separates Buda and Pest. thousands upon thousands of people, tents, and drunks...lol. they practically built a city out of nothing just for this festival. everything from mobile tattoo parlors to yoga studios to anything else you can imagine. aside from the festival i got to enjoy going to some r&r at the thermal baths, sorta made me think i ... read more

Hello from Budapest! Our flight leaves for Athens today and we have a little time to kill at our hostel so I thought I'd say hello. Budapest has been a fantastic city. We did a bus tour of the city and saw all the major sites on the first day. Then we spent the following day at one of the Thermal Baths, relaxing. The bath was in a beautiful park with a castle and moat so we just hung out in the park and baths all day. Yesterday we walked around the city and then went caving below the city. We had a little too big of a group, so we had to do a lot of waiting around, which wasn't too fun, but other than that, we had a great time crawling around, getting dirty ... read more

Budapest’s social scene goes non-stop, around the clock. Entertainment options range from cafés, theater, jazz clubs, thumping nightclubs, and late night pubs. Falling short of my goal to find a particular underground night spot along the Danube in Pest, and then perturbed the wine bar in Buda I sought out was closed for vacation (things they can never inform you of in a guidebook!), I trudged back to my apartment, indignant and resigned to retire early for the evening. Other than the dim incandescent lights that are suspended over the dark back streets of Pest, late night establishments leave one lit sign outside their door to indicate they’re open. Nearing Garay Tér, a few of these signs called out my name, and I decided to explore these underground vaults of nocturnal life. The most interesting point ... read more

I never wanted to come to Budapest. In fact, the whole trip down to Hungary served as dilemma on how to handle arriving here. Hungary was an inevitability: in order to go anywhere else, particularly south, you had to go through Hungary. And if you have Hungary to contend with, Budapest is a must, as all rail lines converge here. So, what to do? I planned on seeing if there were any long-distance departures in the evening. But that would mean twenty-four hours plus in motion and I could do without this. If the connections existed, could I get a reservation, seat, or couchette on the spot? Experience has dictated that this is not likely. Having decided to get a room around the station, I then talked myself into prolonging my time here. Thousands of visitors ... read more

Budapest will forever be remembered in our minds as the city where we found "hot stuff" also known as "Eros Pista"! Hungary = paprika and as most of you know both Michael and I enjoy spicy foods. We were in heaven trying Goulash and different stews with this wonderful spice. Budapest was somewhat of a shock at first in a culinary sense as well as with the hustle of city life, it was quite different from the calming effect Vienna had on us. Budapest is a big city and learning to navigate it was a bit hard but once we accomplished it, then it was just a treat to experience. We started with the old Castle district, basically poor Budapest managed to get bombed a lot in its history so they had this castle rebuilt several ... read more

Budapest is really growing on me. At first I was pretty intimidated but now I am able to really appreciate it, Budapest is a beautiful city with a great atmosphere that's been through a lot. And by a lot I mean world war bombings and 50 years of communism. Today we're going to drive down to Serbia so over and out comrades.... read more
