Day 12 Piss off! Sure, it has been a few days since I’ve written in this thing but I have been quite busy circumventing the globe. From what my weary noggin recalls, the last time we spoke I was in Berlin and getting onto an overnight train to Budapest. I think I was trying to decide if I should look for a cost-effective place to stay in Berlin or follow my Scottish instincts and take an overnighter train. The latter allowed me to save on a night’s accommodation cost. It was going to be dark outside and I wouldn’t be able to see anything anyway, so why not save a bit of cash and zzzzz the night away? Geo: 47.4984, 19.0408Our first goal this morning was laundry, and it would actually take all morning to realize. After we bought our train tickets (which took an hour), we started looking for laundry service. Hotel, of course, only did it for guests and were of no help giving directions. We found a tourist office in Buda which directed us to a cleaners down the road which directed us to a subway stop. There, we asked Ibusz, and, after walking up and down the street, found a dinghy self-service place with instructions in English! We threw our load into the washer, then walked to the local hotel for coffee and orange juice. We returned to the cleaners, threw the clothes in the dryer, then had an ice cream. Geo: 47.4984, 19.0408Despite an excellent breakfast, today was not ideal. We rode black one station to the bahnhof, hoofing through the heat. I managed to mail the postcards, but our water bottle exploded. Paul waited and waited at a kiosk for a bottle of chilled Volvic, but the clerk was too slow. Thinking we'd miss our train, he gave up. We had reserved seats, but they turned out to be aisle. The other seats contained smoking Spanish women. We pointed out the No Fumar signs, and they proved cooperative. Our train was not as obedient. We left thirty minutes late. Apparently, we were waiting for about 100 Italian boy scouts. They all had first class tickets, and, as there were no seats left, littered the aisles with their backpacks and bodies. Near the Hungarian border, our ... read more
