Hello all, Everything is great. We are in Budapest eating and drinking and participating in the BudaFest days that are in progress. The weather is hot and sunny, so the beer really helps. We are healthy and recovering from our jet lag. Today is church and museum day. Yesterday was a city tour and we now understand the lay of the land. Tomorrow we will be having a thermal spa day with massages and mineral springs and more beer. Hope every one is fabulous.... read more

So my first taste of Hungary from the train was favorable. Lots of fields and farm lands and billboards with too many z´s. My first impression of Budapest was a little unfavorable though because as soon as you get off the train you get lots of people asking you if you have accomodation and you don´t know what is a scam and what isn´t so you just kind of ignore them. Jack and I met some people in the hostel last night and we went out which was fun. We went to what is supposed to be a jazz club but they had a band playing 80s rock which was still fun. Then we went to this like outdoor club with a couple dance floors and styles of music. We ended up mostly just watching drunk ... read more

Sorry for the travelblog delay, but 1) it's difficult to even find Internet cafes in these countries and 2) the cheap side in me emerges and I keep spending all of my money responding to e-mails rather than writing the blog. I hate to do this to those of you who waste away their days sitting and praying that I will post a new blog (HA!), but I think I'm going to wait until I get back to Canada to write the blogs for my trips to Hungary, Austria, Slovakia (the country I'm currently in), Poland (next), and Czech Republic (last stop). I will also have photos to add then! ... read more

I met up with my older brother Sam, I didn't meet him at the station because he got off too early, but it worked out. Now I will have a travel companion, and I'm really relieved. He has started a travel blog as well, and he is a much better writer: www.travelblog.org/bloggers/kazuo Budapest is a real, Western city. Wide boulevards, leafy trees over head, as usual everyone dressing snappy and window shopping. We stayed in Pest, on the other side of the river(the Danube), the bustling trade town, compared to the bourgeois, hilly Buda, home of the nobles and more touristy. We went to a great art museum, walked many kilometers, ate fried dough with mushrooms and sour cream (langos, a real heart-stopper, but cheap and delicious,) Today we went to the statue park where they ... read more

We take a bus to Budapest & arrive around two. Our accomadation got screwed up but we find a place on our 2nd attempt. Budapest is split in two by a river, Buda & Pest. We stay on the Pest side. It is not quite what we had imagined & seems very similar to the countries we have already been to. This is a shame because we wanted to see it before it commercialised too much. Apparently Hungary is know as the Paris of the East & it is not hard to see why. We spent three lazy nights in Budapest, with the highlights being our walks around the city, the markets (for Di !) & the thermal baths. It is a big place & hard to see on foot, but we gave it a good ... read more

Day 37, 7th July. Komárom - Estergom - Szentendre - Budapest (Budaors) Early, at 6am, Scott and I walked around to the thermal-baths next to the site while the others were sleeping. The hot mineral waters were so refreshing to tired legs. For breakfast we ate bread and cheese rolls as the others were waking up. We did manage to be on the road for 10 am for our trip along the Danube to Budapest which turned out further than expected! The wind was in our faces before we turned the bend. Estergom was beautiful with its impressive basilica. Further on we went for a dip in the Danube, which was lovely. The wind then became favourable on the last section directly south into the city. Toby had arranged to meet some friend of the family ... read more

It has been very hot in the last couple days. Maybe I am too Canadian now. I can't handle the heat. It had many thunders in the afternoon and it didn't rain. But finally it rained for 2 mins and the air was alot cooler. Being a bad conference visitor, I have to skip some of the talks. So I skipped 2 afternoon sections and went to a SPA. :) Well, Spa in Budapest means a hot spring with swimming pool. I went to Gellert bath which is one of the biggest in town. It has swimming pool, hot (warm) springs, male only hot springs, female only hs. I couldn't figure out in my lifetime why I need to in the male only hot springs. I went and checked out and saw a sign for massage. ... read more

I went to bed very early tuesday night. Hoping to see some interesting topics in the conference. It took a few mins walk to the conference building. I was a little shock of how disorganize it is. I was quite concern about the amount of people in this conference. I wouldn't say it has more than 120 people. After the signature speakers in the morning. I was quite excited about the afternoon sections. There were 9 different sections all at the same time. It turned out that many of the speakers were not here and the organizer didn't bother to tell us. I could see 6 diferent speakers and I only saw two of them. This conference is just bad. I can't use any better way to describe it. Not even internet service for the visitors. ... read more
