Sorry for the delay in posts. We have been in transit for a day and prior to that were lazing in the sun by the river in Cesky Krumlov. We loved Cesky Krumlov, the place wasn't half as busy as Prague and yet had similar things to see and do (ie a castle on the hill, nice river, good food, interesting czechs etc). Our train trip to Budapest was very eventful (unfortunately) as we had a run of bad luck. First, our shuttle was overbooked, and we had to wait over 45 mins for another car to take a couple alongside us to Linz. Then, when we were at the border the Czech's lost Bec's passport (we got it after turning back to the border) and then at the Austrian border they lost a British passport ... read more

Hello all Well here I am, in Budapest! It's bloody hot here. About 38 degrees in the shade. Luckily I did the senisble thing and went on a hop on hop off bus tour around the city - so no traipsing around in the scorching, brain-dissolving heat like I was fool enough to do in Rome. Is beautiful city in two parts - Buda and Pest, straddling the Danube. Bits of it remind me of London. Theyve got heros square which has neo-classical art building at one end (like our national gallery) which is also an art gallery and then a massive collumn in the middle but instead of nelson - what looks like an angel. At the base of the column it was very different as they had statues of scary looking Eastern types (think ... read more

Hello everyone, I enjoyed Budapest so much that I stayed for a full week. The city was originally two cities, Buda on one side of the Danube and Pest on the other side. I visited their Opera House. The stage is second largest in the world--second only to Covent Gardens. It measures 48 metres deep and 28 metres across. Many parts of the theatre are covered with 24K gold. It was built, of course long before air conditioning, so they built two rooms on either side of the stage that would be filled with ice before a performance and fans would blow cold air out to the audience. It has three staircases. One fabulous sweeping marble staircase for most people, another one for poor people and a third one for royalty that would lead directly to ... read more

Budapest is an incredible city. Elegant, composed, and vibrant--qualities we found remarkable as the place has been out from under the stifling Soviet influence for less than 15 years. Budapest's refinement seemed all the more remarkable after a thorough education into the terror that reigned the nation during successive Nazi and Stalinist governments. We had no idea until visiting the city's world-class "Terror House" museum exactly how difficult Hungarians of our parents' and grandparents' generations had it. First the city. As we said briefly in our last installment, Budapest somehow avoided erecting the monstrous and dull Communist buildings that stand on every Bucharest street corner like gulag comendants. (see picture). Budapest feels more like "Old Europe" than just about anywhere we've been, including most of Old Europe. While we lack the architectural jargon to describ... read more

Rather than try to fit everything from the last few weeks into one blog, I’m going to split them up between the different cities I visited; however, I will try to entertain you with stories and experiences rather than just recounts of where I visited, as the latter will force me to actually remember all of the names of places I visited and all of you are more than capable of reading guidebooks and travel magazines that will do these places more justice than I could ever hope. I left Nice on July 1st, but, before I left, I was lucky enough to get a chance to celebrate Canada Day with a fellow Canadian—my friend Tammy from Doha was on a Mediterranean cruise, which stopped in Nice for a day. After a very interesting breakfast where ... read more

Since we last wrote from Istanbul we've travelled back in time through Romania and Hungary to an era when Billy Idol, White Snake and Boy George, rollerblading and mullets were all extremely fashionable. For anyone eager for a dose of 80's nostalgia should certainly pay a visit to a the former Communist bloc. We bid farewell to our lovely Turkish hotel (and its crazy owner who repeatedly, but unsucessfully, requested that Alissa help him put his contact lenses in his eyes) and spent a full 24 hours (scheduled for 16 hours) twiddling our thumbs in a sleeper car through Bulgaria to Bucharest, Romania. Our first impression, made upon our arrival at 10pm, was that the city seemed quiet. Not busy with traffic, not full of people, not lit up with restaurants and cafes. We thought that ... read more

So today Jeff and I were walking the streets of Budapest, just casually trying to get to our next destination, a synagogue. Then suddenly we see this shirtless man standing with some metal-looking other men. And the shirtless man looks a lot like Billy Idol. Billy Idol is playing here tomorrow, by the way. And the other men around him look a lot like roadies/bodyguards. So we stop and pretend to look at our map, while really staring at him. I even paparazzi-ed him. Then we walked away. But after about four blocks we decided that we wanted, and were brave enough to ask for a picture with him. So we walked back and asked one of the bodyguards. He said that Billy was just hanging out, having a good time, and talking to his mates ... read more

yesterday morning we got a slow start since we both had to ˝beautify˝ourselves for an afternoon at the thermal baths. breakfast was my amazing honey yogurt with bits of oat and then bread with my ham cream cheese. LOL. we also caught a glimpse of our new apartment-mates, these two girls about our age from presumably the UK. the first thing on the day's agenda was the West End Shopping Center, eastern europe's largest shopping mall. btw this keyboard is all switched around so pardon any horrendous spelling errors. kasia needed a bathing suite and i decided that i hated mine so we both HAD to buy new ones. i ended up getting the first one i saw at quicksilver but for whatever reason if you're a girl and looking for a non-whorish bathing suite, you're ... read more

Our hostel just sucked 3 days out of this trip. Which isn´t that bad considering we really needed the break and we can use the best western card some other time. Yesterday and today though we actually got out and saw some stuff. We went and saw the parliament building and explored the castle district yesterday. We also checked out St Istavan (Stephen)ś basillica which had a nice panorama of Budapests skyline. You can definately tell this is the farthest east we have been, there are very contrasting spires of of the various churches and castles. Today we checked out The House of Terror, which sounds funny, but it is actually a museum about the take over of the Hungarian governement by Nazis and Soviets. They play creepy techno and then give you these like dissertations ... read more

our last full day in Prague was spent basically wandering around the city...we had a rather late start and journaled and had some breakfast in the lounge before finally heading out. first we had to do some errands, the primary one being laundry. we walked over to traveller's hostel down the street and dropped off our laundry, quasi-pretending we were staying there. they didn't ask any questions, so that was easy. we stopped back to pick up our forgotten passports, kasia got pizza and myself a drink from albert's, and then we headed to the train station to purchase our tickets to hungary. probably our favorite part of the morning's journey was seeing an old man's scrotum hanging out of his shorts on the metro. dobry den, indeed! once our "business" was done with, we took ... read more
