We will eventually have to return to Gythio on the south coast in just over a week to catch the ferry to Crete but before then there is still plenty of the Peloponnese to explore. Consequently we headed north on an amazing road which climbed steadily to the pretty mountain village of Kosmas and then plunged steeply down past huge cliffs into a gorge formed by the seasonal river Dafnon which led us back to the east coast at the town of Leonidio. On the way we visited the peaceful convent of Panagia Elonis which is built in an impossible position under one of the cliffs on the side of the gorge.

We stayed the night at the attractive small port of Plaka on an excellent beachside and scenically located campsite called Semele Camping which had only opened this year. During a meal at the taverna by the port we had an interesting chat with two Swedish couples who were on a week’s sailing holiday.
