We had a gentle morning in the sunshine, a swim and finally tore ourselves away from beautiful Plaka at midday.

There followed an enjoyable drive north along the coastal road to Nafplio, a pretty town dominated by two castles with a long and chequered history. It was founded by the Ancient Greeks and over the centuries occupied by Franks, Venetinas, Byzantines and Turks. In 1821 the Greeks laid siege to the town for over a year before it finally fell to them. To reach the highest castle, Palamidi, means climbing over 900 steps, but we cheated, took a taxi on the road up and walked down.

We stayed the night right by the sea at Camping Nicholas at Archea Epidavros ready for our visit to the famous ancient theatre tomorrow. Our meal at the local taverna was interrupted by a rain squall, the first we have had since we arrived in Greece.
