From the camp site in the early morning sunlight we drove along a spit of land which divides Navarino Bay from the adjacent Gialovo Lagoon. This took us to the start of our walk up to Palestrasto Castle. After finding our way through the castle ruins we were rewarded with a spectacular view of the remarkable Voidokilia Beach below. Then followed some tricky scrambling down a steep and rocky path past Nestor’s Cave to the deserted beach where we had a quick skinny dip in the crystal clear water. Our way back to the van was along a lovely path between the lagoon and the cliffs below the castle.

We drove along the edge of the bay to the picturesque port of Pylos at its southern end where we rewarded ourselves with a lunch at a tavern recommended by the guide book. There was no menu but we were taken into the kitchen where the chef helped us make our choice of stuffed tomatoes, artichokes and Dorado fish.
