08 September 2014 Our day started with a beautiful
walk along the river for about a kilometre.
Then it was the long haul back out of the gorge to visit one of the attractive villages on its rim, Stemnitsa.
This was followed by the drive (which was longer than it should have been due to my poor navigation) through the mountains to the Temple of Apollo built in about 450BC and set in an isolated location at a height 1131m. It is covered in a huge tent erected in 1987 and is the subject of a long restoration programme which involves removing and resetting the columns.
Our night time stop was on another car park adjacent to a small archaeological site in a superb elevated position.
