We woke in a terrible way. Not so much from the alcohol because, touch wood at the moment we can well and truely handle it, it was more from the absolute serious lack of sleep.
We dragged ourselves out of bed, put on minimal makeup and made our way out to Crete at about 9:30am. we skipped breakfast as we had to be back on the ship no later than 11:00am.
We walked for a bit (on the way getting some breakfast) before arriving in the main shopping strip of the city. Not a lot going on, just more souvenier shops. We made our way up further past a lovely church and up to th fountain in the middle. Made a quick photostop there then continued up to the markets, which again, not so impressive. So we headed back on foot, considered a cab but thought we needed the fresh air and exercise and made it back to the port with 10 or so minutes to spare.
We went back to our rooms where we decided to have a quick snooze before our contiki meeting at midday. Only thing was that we were so exhausted that we forgot to set an
alarm, thank goodness I woke at 11:55am so we bolted down to the place where our meeting was being held. It was just formal stuff, what was going on when we got to Santorini in the afternoon, and feedback sheets etc for contiki.
After we went up to the top deck for some lunch. No sunbaking today as was a little red from yesterday. We had lunch then came back to the cabin until we heard the announcement to say for us to head down to the disembarkment area to get off in Santorini.
We got off and straight on to a bus where we drove for ages to get 'Santorini' that you see in the pictures. My goodness the drive was a little terrifying. Steep mountain sides, roads barely big enough for 2 cars and they had buses coming both ways.
When we arrived we were greeted with wine and nuts, of the local variety which were both stunning, then we made our way up the path to discover the beauty that is Santorini.
Which walls, blue domes and doors, the views which were so spectacular. It is almost indescribable. The place is stunning and every corner you turn
is even more stunning than the last.
We shopped, we took photos, we took it all in. Amazing.
Then it was time to head down the mountain. We had the choice of cable car or donkey. Of course we chose the donkey. I felt sorry for them BUT they did look extremely well cared for.
It was a long and bumpy road down, not painful though like I had imagined it would be. We didnt go all the way to the bottem, there was a point where the guy stopped us and we walked the rest.
When we got to the bottom we sat and had a drink and watched the sun start to set before jumping on the tendor boat back to the ship to get some amazing shots of the sunset.
As we'd had such a big night the night before we decided to just hang out in the cabins and sort out our gear as we had to have our suitcases out in the corridor to be collected by midnight so also had to have out what we needed for the next day.
Ah what an amazing day that was.
