Today was a tech adventure… my networks all randomly stopped working. The wifi at my place in Heraklion was iffy at best in my room, but this morning didn’t show up at all as a network. And my data wouldn’t connect either. Even when I got into the city still nothing. So that’s a problem lol. Thankfully I have offline maps on my phone so I could still get around ish, but it’s a good thing I looked at the bus to the airport (to pick up my car) ahead of time bc I would’ve been screwed otherwise. (Also shoutout to the hotel for letting me leaving my bag there for 3 days until I come back to Heraklion lol)
The Heraklion airport feels like it hasn’t been updated since 1970. It is the sketchiest looking, most disorganized airport I’ve ever been in lol I’m glad I wasn’t flying - it’s just massive clumps of people and no seats and just… chaotic. I had to walk way off the lot for my car rental which was annoying, but I finally found got there (sheesh) and off I went! Thankfully I didn’t have to drive through Heraklion and was able to
just head out along the coast. I have a cute little red Yaris that is so old it still has a cd player LOL. Considering it’s age, no surprise I can’t plug in my phone to charge which is also hella annoying. Who would have thought my first car in Zakynthos was the best of the lot lol.
Anyway, I planned to stop in Agios Nikolaos but without data I was not fussing around to find parking. Honestly this part im hating so much - it stresses me out to no end trying to find parking to the point it’s just not worth it or enjoyable for me. I basically did one loop in the town centre, got stuck in an alley bc a guy decided to get out of his car and block the whole road for 5min lol, and then off I continued. I was also going to go to the Cretan Olive Oil museum thing but there too the parking lot was 100% full and so I just went screw it and started driving in the general direction towards my Airbnb.
I stopped for lunch at the first place I saw that had some level
of parking. High bar, I know. It was actually good - I stopped in Pachia Ammos at Take a Break and the guys were super friendly. They explained what all the option of pies were and gave me their recommendations too of course. Second guy asked me where I'm from bc I don’t “sound” European lol. Canada. That launched us into a big long talk of course haha. He’s from this area but currently lives in NYC so we were talking about that too.
I decided to go to Sitia a) to go something and b) I wanted groceries. Sitia's a big enough town but since it's further east it's not that touristy yet... comparatively speaking so I had high hopes for parking... and I was correct!! Giant parking lot near the city centre with quite a few spaces. Big score lol. I basically just wandered around the centre and the waterfront - got followed around by a few cats (sweeties
The drive was GORG. You're zigzagging along the cliff sides, overlooking the water every which way and it's stunning, especially just as the sun is starting to go down. I found my Airbnb without much trouble (even
if it's on a dreaded rock road and I was driving like 5km to not scratch my poor car.) Absolutely worth it - it's stunning for the view and super cute inside! It’s basically one room (bed and small kitchen) + bathroom, overlooking the water. So, so happy 😊
