I forgot to actually post yesterday lol. I drove down towards Elafonissi beach which was nice, but was no Falasarna.
The drive was an adventure, as always lol. Actually most of it was totally fine - there were just a few small villages with the usual SUPER narrow roads you just hope you don’t meet anyone incoming. There’s also a tunnel but they have a stop light for it at least. (I love that the locals just blast ahead anyway and inch forward.) The rest was a whole lot of switch backs but two lanes wide so happy with that 😊
Arriving at Elafonissi I immediately disliked the parking situation - you have to pay unlike Falasarna and you have to park like 10min walk away. That is an eternity when it’s 39C out lol. Needless to say, I stopped at a taverna half way for an orange juice lol - the fresh good stuff.
The beach itself is nice, but again I think Falasarna was much better in terms of amenities but also just the water and views and crowdedness. Elafonissi is sort of like two lagoons..? Like it’s very shallow water, so you can walk out
pretty far and it’s still only up to your waist.
The water was amazingly clear though. It was interesting to see the sand ripples on the ground from the waves and also to see the little fishies swimming around your legs.
It was HELLA hot today, like seemed even more so than previous days even though it was the usual 38-39C. But there’s zero shade and the water is just blinding - I was joking that I have no idea how I took any photos bc I couldn’t see my phone screen AT ALL the entire time I was there. (Prove my point, in all my selfies I have a sunscreen moustache bc I couldn’t check lol)
On the way back to Kissamos I stopped for a Greek salad (I needed greens) and then I stopped at Cave Agia Sofia / Wisdom of God which was a cool spot. Literally and figuratively. I mean, first you had to climb a kajillion stairs in the blazing sun… but once you got there, the cave offered brilliant cool/dampness to it. It was also a fascinating little visit - not a long walk inside, but there’s info in English.
Back in Kissamos my kitty friend brought me a dead rat. Thanks Greek Homer, appreciate the sentiment. Ahem.
Today was pretty low key - I drove back to Chania airport with my car rental, bussed back to Heraklion and just sort of bummed around the neighbourhood of my hotel and did some laundry. Exciting haha.
I had really good Moussaka for supper (Amalia’s Kitchen - it’s right near my hotel, worth the try!) and I will forever appreciate the added dessert treat with the bill. Every time I write Moussaka I smile to myself bc in my head I say it like Mustafaaaaaa. Anyway! I had a pomegranate Prosecco with it, chefs kiss. Totally worth being devoured by mosquitoes. Idk why they’re so much worse here?? I got like one bite in all of Chania region - easily got 10 in one night here.
Other than that just kind of roamed around immediate area of the hotel with no real plan - tomorrow I’ll actually go see stuff.
Oh and PS? Oregano Lays?? So good. Thanks.
