As a solo traveler, you might ask what I do to fill the "down" time during my trips. Other than the occasional nap, my down time is quite limited. My television viewing is certainly curtailed, since I can only handle so much of BBC and CNN. "Kelly's Thoughts on Things" has some suggestions.
While many individuals view traveling as an opportunity to enjoy quality time with loved ones, it can also serve as a personal odyssey for self-reflection and rejuvenation, offering respite from the frenetic pace of life.
Traveling alone can be a liberating experience, but it can also be challenging at times.
If you have upcoming travel plans and find yourself concerned about how to keep yourself entertained while traveling alone, fret not!
Here are her ideas: Read a book. Always a good idea to bring a book. At a minimum, I have some light reading (John Grisham), and a travel guide. Listen to music or podcasts. Not a bad idea, but I feel that I miss too much of the local culture when I do this. I prefer listening to their language, laughter, music, and neighborhood sounds. I
just cannot imagine walking through Nawlins with headphones and miss the jazz and blues!Take photos. I do this all the time. And I tend to do some editing at the end of the day as well. Many times, the best photos just appear, no amount of planning can create the "perfect" photo in my humble opinion. I want a photo that truly reflects the culture and people. Explore the local area. This is always at the top of my list, even when I have no clue about the area. Getting lost is always a great adventure. Finding a great hole in the wall place is an added bonus.Write in a journal. My version of this is the daily email that I send to you. In the pre-internet days, or when traveling in areas without wifi (like the Trans-Siberian), writing is a great pastime.
You know that I have suggestions, right?Hang out in the hotel or local bar. I have met many interesting people.Use public transportation and explore the city.Take a walking tour. This is a great way to gain a
good orientation to the city and meet some locals.Find the public library, and just sit and watch.Walk. Just walk the city.
And more words from Kelly:
Traveling alone can be a rewarding experience, but it can also be challenging at times.
By finding ways to entertain yourself, you can make the most of your solo travels and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Whether you're reading a book, exploring the local area, or learning a new skill, there are plenty of ways to keep yourself entertained while traveling solo.
All you have to do is explore different hobbies and things you don’t normally do and consider having fun with them.
I love solo travel, try it sometime. You will be rewarded in many ways.
