Yesterday, I went to Gibraltar with five of my friends. It was our first trip that wasn't through API so it was an adventure. We rode the bus for three hours from Cadiz to La Linea de Concepcion, which is right on the Gibraltar border. We walked two minutes from the bus station to get to customs, which was an absolute joke. The guy behind the counter didn't even make us open our passports, he just had us show them to him. It is funny how one different Gibraltar is from the town that is two minutes away. Gibraltar is a UK territory, so English is their primary language. I loved their accents! Another thing I love about Gibraltar is their free bus system. We took a bus from customs to the cable cars that would ... read more

There is a bit if British territory off the south of Spain. Gibaltar, or The Rock, is home to about 30,000 residents. One can see double decker buses, policemen in their old-fashioned uniforms and the distinctive red phone booths and postal boxes. An important site of several conflicts, including WW2, the mountain and caves are peppered with bastions. We took a bus about halfway up the mountain to Europa Point. Depending on where you are on the Rock, you can see the coast of north Africa. The top of the Rock is best reached by cable tram. Up at the top, we were greeted by George, a Barbary Ape. A colony of apes live among the trees and are always on the lookout for anything in a shiny wrapper. Sure enough, we saw one of George's ... read more

Sunday May 1st, 2011 Gibraltar, Great Britain We arrived at the Rock of Gibraltar this morning, cruising in with a stiff headwind and frothy seas. The passage thru the straits was stormy, but you could still see across this narrow entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. At this point it is only 8 miles from Spain to Africa. The small peninsula that is the actual Rock of Gibraltar was prominently visible on the end of Spain. The top of the Rock itself was obscured by clouds and rain. Once inside the protected harbor it began to clear and by the time we went ashore at 10am, most of the mountain was visible and the rain had subsided. The old part of the city itself is surrounded by walls and fortifications. When you walk inside the old gate ... read more

This morning's plan was to get up early, check out, store my luggage and take the cable car up to the Rock. The cable car runs so close to my balcony, that I was able to take some pictures as it went past. I made my way down to the station, but it seemed closed, so I grabbed some coffee and wrote postcards. When I went back, I found out that it was closed for maintenance. They didn't have any information, didn't care and said it could be 5 minutes, 5 hours, or all day. Thank you so very much. It boggles my mind how so many bumps and glitches there can be in a trip. The reason I came here was to go up on the Rock and see the apes and the view. Time ... read more

We had a fairly leisurely start, setting off back to Gibraltar about 9am. We were ultimately aiming for the campsite where we would be meeting our overland truck for our African odyssey – the campsite being in Spain, about 20 minutes from Gibraltar. We decided to stop off first to visit Malaga though, on the way driving on more fantastically smooth highways that threaded their way through acres and acres of olive groves. It was pretty cool – and definitely felt like proper ‘Spain’ ;-) It took about 2 hours to reach Malaga, but to be honest we weren’t that impressed once we got there, I guess it was both quiet season and, like so many places in Spain, it comes alive at night – but there didn’t seem to be much of interest there during ... read more

A great day and another highlight of the tour. Well done France. Gibraltar, 10th July, 2010. Gibraltar has been a part of my growing up since I was a lad at school, a part of the essential history of my country of birth. I learned about it in my history classes and later when in the RAF it was one of my preferred options as an overseas posting. RAF Gibraltar was one of the most sought after postings in the RAF and quite a few of my friends were lucky enough to be stationed there and they had wonderful memories of that time. So landing on this particular place was almost like a coming home even though I had never been there before. A group of 6 of us hired an eight seater taxi for a ... read more

Land HO! Gibraltar, Great Britain After 9 ½ days at sea we will be in Gibraltar tomorrow morning at 5 am. Yea! This has been a great crossing. Mostly good weather and the days were filled with reading, lectures on the ports, eating, walking, visiting, eating, making new friends, watching movies on a gigantic screen outdoors on the pool deck, eating, walking the decks, eating, walking the stairs, and more stairs, and more stairs (we’re on deck 11!), and eating to keep up our strength. We crossed over 6 time zones and had to change our clocks so many times our bodies didn’t have a clue as to what time it was. In our dark little cave room (which we love) we didn’t wake up till 10 am one morning and on another night Cope was ... read more

Hola a todos, So we left Arcos de la Frontera on Monday morning to drive to Gibraltar. The day was cloudy (the only cloudy day of our trip!) and extremely windy. The province of Cádiz receives a lot of wind I think mostly because it is near the strait of Gibraltar and apparently some people have to receive psychological treatment in the province because all the windy days make them go kind of crazy! The drive took less than 2 hours and when we drove through the passport checkpoint, they looked at our passports but didn't stamp them which was too bad...a Gibraltar stamp would have been pretty cool! We parked the car in a garage and set out to explore the town. We got a map at the tourism office and were told that we ... read more
