I've now seen the Rock and can tell you why it's a big deal. Historically, this place would've been the ultimate vantage point for anyone coming from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, or vice versa. These days, it's a tax-free zone with a good sailing industry that allows for unique tourism. I use the word "unique" loosely, since it's really one of those destinations that every world traveler needs to visit and most British tourists to the south of Spain have visited multiple times. Perhaps my favorite experience was with the monkeys - Barbary macaques that are the only monkeys living in the (semi) wild in Europe. They live along the upper reaches of the Rock, so you have to be determined to see them. Or you could just take a minibus up like I did. ... read more

Gibraltar 16.

08/07/14 Gibraltar: During the night Dawn Princess continued to steam in West-South-Westerly course towards Gibraltar. This morning we manoeuvred and berthed inside of the breakwaters of Gibraltar. Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula at the entrance of the Mediterranean. It has as area of 6.0 Sq Km’s and a northern border with the Province of Cadiz in Andalusia, Spain. After departure at 2:00 p.m. today we will transit through the Straits of Gibraltar linking the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. The highlight of the visit today was the visit to the Great Siege Tunnels. Which were dug by hand with out the use of explosives in the 1700’s. The tour of the tunnels was authentic with displays all the way through. We managed to take some ... read more

At Sea: Over night and early morning we steamed in a South Westerly direction, later on during the day we altered course and headed in a West-South-Westerly direction. During our sea day today at some stage we will cross the Greenwich Meridian, this is the line that separates the eastern and western hemispheres, such as the equator divides the northern and southern hemispheres. It runs from the North Pole to the South Pole passing through the borough of Greenwich, in London giving the line its name. We have noticed that as we head further north we are leaving the oppressive heat behind us, the temperature now is quite pleasant, in fact at night on the upper deck it can get a bit chilly. I have also included some extra photos taken in France and Barcelona to ... read more

Hello everyone! It's been a long time since I've written one of these, but you really haven't missed much. From Christmas until the start of May I really haven't done anything! However after going for two interviews I have finally got myself a job and not starting it for two weeks I made the decision to go on a quick holiday before starting. After booking it just a week before, two weeks ago I flew to Gibraltar for a three day holiday, including a visit to Morocco. Flying out of the Saturday morning I arrived at Gibraltar airport, and took a quick look around the centre of the town before crossing the border into Spain without even stopping to show my passport and making my way over to the windy town of Tarifa - the southernmost ... read more

The best vista, according to the vista guy. We rode the cable car to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar and the view is magnificent. We can see Spain, the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, Morocco, Africa, and the town of Gibraltar. It really is an amazing place. Greeting us at the top were the Barbary Apes. Reminded me of the time my brothers bought a pet monkey. We learned something new yesterday. We noticed that in Lisbon and Cadiz when we entered the port we had "red LEFT returning" navigational aides. Our boating friends will understand that this is opposite of the navigation rules we are accustomed to. We were so curious that we sent a note to the Navigation Officer asking him about this. He explained that in International Waters it is "red ... read more

Gibraltar UK 26 August 2013 At last we have seen The Rock of Gibraltar!!!! It has been another life-long aim. We didn’t climb the rock so missed seeing the monkeys that guard The Rock, but we did drive through the 2.5km tunnel which goes through the middle of it. The tunnel was not lined with concrete. It was solid rock that they had tunneled through so there was no need for concrete lining!! At the point of Gibraltar that is closest the Africa there in an underground museum with the history of Gibraltar and the UK presence. The multi story houses carried numerous Union Jack flags so there was no doubt that this was the UK and not Spain. We had to drive through immigration into Gibraltar which is a peninsula of land. We drove right ... read more

We have neglected the blog for a few stop overs, this has been mainly because there has been no internet available !! We left Lagos on Thursday 8th August and spent a very pleasant day sailing to Albufeira. The marina is surrounded by holiday apartments and is a little way from the town. It must be said that If I was paying for a holiday to Albufeira I think I would be disappointed. We left there on Saturday 10th August for a short days sail across the bay to Vilamoura, which is a far more civilised place to be. We left Vilamoura late afternoon on Monday intending to have an overnight sail to Gibraltar. We made better headway than I had expected and it soon became clear that if we continued we would arrive at Gibraltar ... read more

With some dark clouds in the sky the discussion on attire was a difficult one for Woolly, Sombrero, Bandana or Scarf? Finally he was ready and we headed from the coast road towards Gibraltar. The passing scenery would have been stunning, well it was stunning to be fair but the wind turbines did detract quite a lot from the beautiful mountains. The forty kilometres journey led us through the busy town of San Rouge, with huge billboards advertising C and A, Primark, Shoe Zone and many other familiar names, but where were the signs for piece of Britain on the Spanish shores? Woolly says – with only a few kilometres to go I spotted our first sign for Gibraltar. Ceded to the British in 1715, the Spanish have tried to regain it several times resulting in ... read more

We started out early this day as we had a 3 hour drive to Gibraltar ahead of us. Thanks to the GPS, a series of roundabouts, and a missed exit that took us about an hour out of the way, we ended up in a little country town named Las Cazebas deSan Juan that is built up on a mountain, with the church situated at the very top. Back on the autovia and headed in the right direction this time, we drove through vineyards, farmlands, cattle ranches, wind turbine farms, and peaks and valleys of the mountains. We even passed a castle, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. We spent the majority of the drive oohing and aahing at the marvelous Spanish countryside. Each time we went through a tunnel, we would come out and be ... read more
