Waiting for our KD Cruise
Waiting for our KD Cruise boat at Sankt Goar This morning we had our first breakfast at the hotel. It consisted of boiled egg, assorted meats and cheeses, cereal, toast and jams, and of course coffee. The hotel is a small place with about 10 rooms and not bad at all for 45 Euros per night, except we can't seem to get them to turn on the heating in our room. The front door is locked most of the time, but our room key opens the back door so it not really inconvenient. There is also a small fridge on the ground floor where you can purchase water, sodas, beer, and even wine and just add it to your tab. I use it to store my soda for the next day.
Today is our KD Rhine River cruise day. I bought all day tickets figuring we could visit several towns up and down the river, but it didn't turn out like I'd planned. The main problem is that there are so few times each day that the boat stops at any given town, except Koblenz and Mainz, that you can't really get off somewhere, see anything, and catch another boat quickly. In retrospect, we should have bought a single
Bad Salzig
Bad Salzig trip ticket for half the money. Oh well, live and learn. After a pleasant cruise up river, we decided to get off at Braubach so we could see the Marksburg Castle. We'd hoped to tour the castle, go back down, and catch another boat up river to Koblenz, then maybe take the train back to Sankt Goar. By the time we finished our tour of the castle however, we realized there was only one more boat in either direction that stopped at Sankt Goar, so we took the 3:05pm boat back down river to Sankt Goarhausen.
Marksburg Castle is one of the best castles we've ever visited. The entry fee was 6 Euros each, and comes with a guide (the only way you can visit inside). Although the guide only spoke in German, they "loaned" us an English guide for a 5 Euro deposit. The castle is quite good sized with a lot of furnishings, mostly from the period if not the castle itself. There were about 15 people on the tour and I think almost all of them understood German except us. I was really wishing I'd learned German. After the tour, we returned our guide, bought a
Burg Sterrenberg & Burg Liebenstein
Burg Sterrenberg & Burg Liebenstein thimble and pressed coin and then headed back down to Braubach. By this time it was after 2pm, and since the boat schedule was the way it was, we could either take the 3:05pm boat back downstream, or a boat or train up river to Koblenz and then a train back down to Sankt Goar. We opted to head back downriver, getting off at Sankt Goarhausen to grab something to eat and look around.
We ate at the Cafe Restaurant Rheingold since it was right near the ferry we'd take back to Sankt Goar. Manoli was feeling about down and not hungry, so she had a bowl of vegetable soup. I ordered the bratwurst plate with red cabbage and potatoes which was quite good. With a Coke, the bill came to just under 15 Euros. By this time Manoli wasn't feeling very good at all, having the beginning of a cold, so after dinner we took the ferry across to Sankt Goar, for 1.70 Euros each, and returned to the hotel so she could rest.
Tomorrow we plan on taking trains up and or down river to see some more of the castles and other interesting sights.
