Christmas band
I loved hearing the people sing below - it was wonderfully beautiful Christmas Eve in Munich…. aaah…. It was a lovely day, colder than I was led to believe though! I walked from my hotel back to the main square for the last day of the Christmas Market to find some more gifts and enjoy the atmosphere. I seriously love these things.
Most of you know that I'm not really a huge fan of crowds. They make me cranky. And this place was crowded. I got there early enough though so that I was able to get my food and drink easily. I got a punsch from one of the first vendors, who put some cut up fruit in as well as the alcohol. By far the best I've had. I next bought two sandwiches of thinly sliced pancetta on rye bread for my meals later from a friendly young vendor (so far, the vendors are much much friendlier than in Aachen).
I then went in search of gifts. I found a nice little shop with wood toys and games and loved it. I almost bought a game for my nephew before I realized that one (and just that one) was made in Sri Lanka. Bummer. I walked down to the
Viktualienmarkt - which is basically another food market. It was big and busy and awesome. Lots of flowers here too. I almost got a giant beer, but realized I may not be allowed to carry that thing around and even if I could, I would not be able to drink it!
So, I was having bad luck on the gift front, while still enjoying the atmosphere. I decided to get my own gifts and went shopping at H&M. They were having a massive sale! I got 13 pairs of socks, a toque, four shirts and a sweater all for 55 euros. I desperately need socks and a proper warm hat! I wandered a little more, tried to get into the beerhaus, but it was crowded with very unfriendly staff, so I headed back to my hotel. I stopped at the metro station along the way to pick up some snacks for the next two days: beer, chips and water.
Later that evening, I was planning on room service, but they said just for today it was closed. Understandable since it was Christmas Eve and the staff probably wanted to be with their families. Instead, would I be interested
in their buffet for 15 euros? Sure. So I went down and really had to laugh. I mean…. wow. I was the only person in there for good reason. The "buffet" consisted of two salad bowls of lettuce and tomatoes, two types of dressing, bread, sliced varieties of ham and cheese, and two types of soup (potato and chili con carne). But the good news? It came with a free drink! Yayyyy! I was starving at this point, so I went for it. I will say the bread and chili con carne were actually very good. I stocked up on those til I could not take anymore and went back to my room. Seriously? 15 euros??? Buffet?? Good lord.
I finished my night by reading and planning my last two days here. Friday I plan to go to Neuschwanstein Castle and Saturday to Dachau Concentration camp. Christmas Day I may walk around the gardens, but it is supposed to rain, so I may just chill in my room for once. My flight leaves at 9:40pm, so I still have three full days in Munich.
