Day 3 of our 4 days in Munich it poured rain ALL day long. That really put a wrench in the site seeing plans. We attempted an afternoon at Oktoberfest, but with the pouring rain it packed those beer tents even tighter than ever. So it was headed for dry ground and went to the Marienplatz area to find a beer hall and get out of the rain.
We found and spent the afternoon at Augustinerbrau pub for lunch and beers. When we finally emerged from the pub it had finally stopped raining. It looked like we had a an hour or so before the sun would set, so I made Bill and our friend Dave go to the English Garten while we had the opportunity. It was quiet at the garden and virtually had it all to our selves. The garden is HUGE and tons of ducks, geese, swans and other birds. The Isar River runs through the garden and along its shores are beautiful weeping willows. The park meadows go on and on... As we are strolling along the rivers edge checking out the flocks of geese and swans swimming in rows, we meet George. He tells us
he was chased by one of the swans the day before. George is a 70 year old German local who has seen and experience a heck of a life. He was so kind and sweet telling us stories of World War II and about the park. He walks with us as we were in pursuit of the Eisbach - where the locals SURF! The sun is about ready to set as we get directions from George on how where to find the surfers at the end of the road and we part ways. Sure enough, there it is a constant wave rolling in the Isar River and several guys are taking turns surfing it. I was most amazed that they were doing this after a day of constant cold rain and that water had to be near freezing. Being from California, we never imaged we would go to Europe and see guys in their wet suits with surf boards with no ocean.
We spent a few minutes watching the surfers before the final light of the day goes down. We hope for clear day on our final day in Munich. Our friend Dave leaves us in the morning for
his next adventure.
Day 4 in Munich, our final and last day in Germany which I had planned to go to Mad King Ludwig’s Castle with Mike's Bike Tour. We got such a late start that we missed that opportunity. It ended up being a perfect sunny day for us. It was great. We only had a few minutes it seemed the night before in the English Garden and I loved it so much I wanted to go back and see more.
What a different scene from rain to shine. The park meadows now filled with people replacing all the ducks and geese. We ran into our new friend George again who walked with us and helped us find our way to the Chinese Tower beer garden. We enjoyed our Oktoberfest beer and pretzel. We shared our table with a couple of ladies from Dublin who took a bus out to spend the day at Oktoberfest and then go right back with in 48 hours. It was a lively scene at the Chinese Tower and we really enjoyed the experience. We left the park at sunset and saw a beautiful end of a great day in Munich.
