MainzMainzMainz

Looking towards the Dom
Already I am doing another update and not even a week has passed so we must have been busy of late! I think from where we left off last time we were staying in a city called Mainz on the river Rhine and the next day was a cruise on the river for the day. The couple that we were staying with were gracious enough to give us a bottle of wine from the area to take along, they spoilt us heaps 😊
So off we went along the river and they told us to get off at a small town called Rüdesheim to climb the hill to where a monument of a lady is. I think she has something to do with all the wine in the area (and there is an unbelievable amount off vines) and is supposed to look after it all. So we did the walking thing up the top and from there is some fantastic views looking back down the river from where we came from and over the small town we walked up from.
This is where we had our picnic and off course the bottle of wine over looking the river and was really nice sitting there until it started to pour. We just ran down the hill to keep on going up the river to our final destination. All along the river there is castle after castle we could not believe how many there is along that stretch of river. Cameras were working overtime with something new around each bend in the river.
We just stayed in that night and relaxed a little since the next day we had to travel to Munich for the big event! Although we would have loved to stay longer in Mainz, it is a great little city exp the old part of town where we were staying was really nice.
We did the car pool thing once again to Munich and saved a fortune and the driver even took us directly to the house where we were staying so that was lucky. It is true about the speed limit thing over here and that there is none, we were sitting on 180K most of the way so travelling doesn't take to long in a car. Arrived in Munich to our new hosts that we were staying with and as we found out the house was full off

hippies! I'm not going to say anything about the house conditions they live in because the people were really nice but eleven people living there, it was not to good.
That afternoon we just went into the city and had a look around and worked out how to get to Füssen the next day for a day trip to see the two famous castles. We went and had a look at some sights but ran out of time so headed back to where we were staying for a nervous nights sleep.
Lucky for our trip to Füssen the weather gods were good to us and not a cloud in the sky to see the castles other wise we maybe couldn't have seen a thing. The one called Neuschwanstein was the better by far and this is where Walt Disney got there ideas for castles and all that. It is at the base of the Alps as well so we got to see some great views of them for the first time. We spent most of the day there walking around and taking it easy but the area is very spectacular as the photos will hopefully show. Just headed back to

Munich and to our Hippy hosts for another nervous night sleep and, when we got there we saw them baking something that wasn't a going to be a cake then try and get some rest for the following big days.
The next day we decided to go and camp for the following two nights in Munich for the reasons we were going to Octoberfest and would be making a noise when getting home at what ever time and the house was, I just can’t describe it. So we found a camp site and it was near full already at 9am the day before Octoberfest with Aussies and Kiwis so was going to be a long couple of days. We managed to do a walking tour of the city though like the one we did in Berlin so once again I can ramble on for ages about info but just write a couple of things we learnt. About Hitler.... Born in Austria, begged the German Government to serve for them in WW1, was a messenger boy to the front line, a gas bomb exploded near him and was blind for awhile and spent the end of WW1 in hospital, got an

award for his bravery, when starting to try and come to power he and his followers had a run in with the police and his body gaurd jumped on him when they opened fire and he got hit eleven times! Imagine the difference if just one got through! He then went to jail but didn't do full time and a few years after this was in power. Over all the tour was again fantastic and we learnt heaps about the past and mainly about beer and its influence on the area over the years.
Now before I get onto Octoberfest to give you an idea what happens here.... A third of the yearly beer in take is done in 2 weeks, 9 million visitors to a city of near only 2 million, the waitress ladies that bring out the beer earn up to 24,000 Euro in two weeks just from tips, they can carry up to 20 mugs in one go and with a litre of beer in each weighs a fair bit. They strap there wrists and forearms up to cope with it all. And the most important and says how many Aussies make a disgrace of themselves, the

nearest Australian embassy is in Berlin 2 12 hours train away so what the government has done because so many drunken Aussies lose there passports, they actually set up an Australian Embassy in Munich for those two weeks to help them out! No where else will this happen in the world! Good old Aussies!

Well to the Octoberfest and it can only be described as brilliant! We went on the first day and was there at even 8.30 to make sure we got a spot in a tent but we could not believe how many people were already there lined up to get in. We first missed out on one we lined up for and lucky for us we got a phone call from a mate saying he is in the beer garden at another tent and has saved us two seats! Well that was fantastic so we settled in and waited for the mayor to crack open the first keg. Once that had happened it was on for young and old, the beer is bloody nice and a litre of that stuff is no worries and even Kylie a non beer drinker was getting through them. Well the

day was long and had our fair share and by the end of it we were up on the tables dancing and singing along with 10,000 other drunks in a tent. Yeah 10,000 people fit in these massive tents! Also there they have rides and games, it is really like a show but all about the beer. I even managed to get a stein glass but took a couple of goes to get one out of the tent. First attempt I was caught and got a ripper kidney punch from the bouncer but my drunken self went back in finished off another beer and managed to sneak away with this one.
So over all had a fantastic day and would love to go back there but not for the opening weekend or any weekend it was way tooo crazy!

So now we are in Austria and today we actually bumped into Dutchy here in Salzburg! He is on his way to Octoberfest now. And also congratulations to the under’s on there great win on the weekend!

Once again this has taken me a couple of days to put all the pics on and write and now we
