Woke up around 8AM and got ready for Eagle’s Nest. It's pretty cold here. The coldest it's been our entire trip. I've been wearing a light jacket most of the time, but I had to break out my North Face jacket. Our hotel room was okay - dated (everything is here) - we have great views of the mountain, Eagle’s Nest sits on and the small, but busy town. A small river runs right through the middle of it. We got free breakfast again - Breads, cheese, meats and scrambled eggs. Headed out to the train station to catch the bus for Eagle’s Nest. The ride up was really pretty. You are on ledge the entire way up. Once we got there we headed to the “brass” elevator. It took us to the “tea room”, which is now a restaurant. The views of the Bavarian Alps were amazing. I believe we were at the highest point in this area. It was clear when we got up there, but the clouds were starting to move in. At one point, one of the mountains looked like it was producing the clouds. I had to take a video of it, really cool. Unless you
are eating in the restaurant, they don’t want you walking around the tea room. We took a quick peak in and headed back down. We spent about 45 minutes here. We got back to the train/bus station and grabbed lunch at a deli/café. A small pizza, chicken sandwich, huge cookie and 2 cokes - for only $9.80!! Shocked by how cheap! Lol.
We then headed over the Salt Mine. Here is a quick overview I found online:
Deep down underneath the ‘Salzberg’ mountain a secret world awaits your discovery. For many years, only the salt miners in Berchtesgaden were allowed to enter the complex tunnel system. Today, part of the mine - which has been in operation for over 500 years now - is open to all fans of adventure. Experience a mysterious walk around under ground and marvel at the fascinating wondrous world of "White Gold".
Details for the salt mine Berchtesgaden:
• travel down on 40m long slides
• raft ride on subterranean lake
• treasure vault - resembles a salt deposit
• multimedia show in salt lab
• train journey to salt cathedral
• walk through the tunnel system
Very cool place! Wish the girls could
have been with us during this tour - they would have really liked it. They have you dress in Miner’s clothes and take you through the mine in a mining car. We got to go on two slides, learn about the mine and then travel by boat over a subterranean lake. We were 680 meters (2230 feet) below. It was cold (9 Celsius), but with the miner’s clothes on, we kept warm. We stopped by the gift shop and bought different flavors of salt. The prices are so cheap here! Or maybe I’m just used to the overpriced items by now! We had a 30 minute wait for the bus, so we decided to walk back - about a 25 minute walk. We walked around the small town, purchased a few souvenirs and grabbed a small gelato (2 cones only $1.80). Headed back to the hotel, grabbed our bags and headed to the train for Munich. About a 2 ½ train ride, we had one transfer in Freising.
We are now in Munich. It’s another big city and the street we are on is like a small Vegas (casinos (members only though - we tried =)), strip joints, bong
shops, etc). Our hotel is really nice and we found a really good Italian restaurant right down the street. We had a huge pizza, caprese salad and shrimp scampi + 2 drinks for only $28. The waiter was great, probably one of the best services we’ve had here so far. We are back in the room relaxing. Heading to Dachau tomorrow and “maybe” might try to go see the Disney inspired castle, depending on time and how far away it is - Neuschwanstein Castle (if Chris will let me =)). I can’t believe tomorrow is our last day. We can’t wait to the see the girls! We’ve had such a great trip - an amazing experience!
