Saanen Goats at the entrance to Saanen
These goats look real but they're not. They are so typical of lively goats jumping and having fun. Goodbye Saanen, Switzerland. Hello Black Forest, Titisee, Germany. We left Saanen at 9.30, set the GPS to our destination and kept driving until we arrived at Titisee at 1pm. From Spiez, on Lake Thun we were out of the mountains and now onto motorways until Basel where we exited on to secondary roads. We had no idea where we were as we wound through narrow valleys and eventually through the Schwarz Wald (Black Forest) to our destination. The parking areas through the area were always full and we wondered what the attraction was as we seemed to be in forest and little else. It is Saturday so maybe the cities empty out and people head for the hills.
On arrival in Titisee we struck wall to wall people and our beloved GPS delivered us into the thick of it. We were on the wrong side of the Hermeshof Bio and somehow had to get around the crowds and back to the correct entrance. We nudged our way through people wandering and taking up the street and eventually arrived at our destination. Rather frazzled I might add! It was too early to check in so we parked and headed off into
Meili Chalet
Our accomodation for the past week. We had the top floor of a tradition local house. town where we had lunch by the Information centre. Amazingly, it wasn't open - with all those people about. Weird! From signage, it's only open from 10 until 12 each day. I don't get it in such a popular place. Never mind, the lunch of smoked trout with horseradish sauce, salad and toast was lovely. And cheap. Double it for Switzerland..............
We then checked into our apartment for the next week which is Hermeshof and Biohaus. Not sure why it's called that. It's right by the downtown area but set in a large grassy meadow. It couldn't be more convenient when I consider the chaos almost next door. It is obviously a very popular holiday destination. Our apartment is one of four and is roomy and quiet. It'll be a good base. Our Guest Card allows us all sorts of free activities including train passes right out to Freiburg and Basel. Entrance to anything is free including golf, boats, trains, buses, you name it.
We needed groceries to take us through the next week and the nearest supermarket is at Neustadt 7km away. We drove around until we found something that looked like what we were looking for and found a no-frills place a bit like Pack and Save. We could not believe how cheap products are. Are we ripped off in NZ or not? Cheese was $3 for 200gm of Gorgonzola. Weiss beer was $2.70 for 6 500ml bottles. These are above average products but were cheap here. We paid half of what we would pay at home - $100 for the week in NZ$. TTAT's approval. Need I say more.
I know very little about this area apart from the fact we came here 40 years ago. There appears to be a lot to do and see based on outdoor activities. Maybe we'll have a bit more time out instead of always being on the move to be exploring.
