We attempted to go to the Cavaillon market this morning en route to Avignon but the parking situation was ugly so we blew it off and detoured our route via Menerbes where Peter Mayle used to live and wrote his famous "Provence" novels. We've since got scoop that he was driven out of the area by the residents once the books were translated into French b/c the locals didn't see his humourous view of Provencal life. He moved back to Long Island for awhile but is now rumoured to be in the town we visited the other day, Lourmarin. Anyway, Menerbes is another beautiful hilltop town with stone alleys and views of vineyards and mountains. Our arrival in Avignon was an experience and a half. It was 2pm, we hadn't eaten and were stuck in the ... read more

Our instinct was right and there wasn't any internet acces in Gordes so two blogs will follow - yesterdays and todays. After packing up and getting our daily crossiant fix at a patisserie in Aix, we mapped out our plan of action (a must when travelling the back roads of France) and started on our way. The 2 lane roads were barely wide enough for one car, let alone 2 and the curves and winding lanes resembled the Whistler run back home. Driving through the hundreds of vineyards towards the Luberon was a pretty drive but once we arrived in the Luberon is was breathtaking. We had lunch in a quaint town called Lourmarin. John had quiche and I a croque monsieur. Think I've mentioned this before but there are way way way more French people ... read more

This morning wandered throughout the old town of Aix-en-Provence and figured out what this Provencal life was all about. It's about taking things easy, wandering down narrow streets, originally built for horse and carriage, and enjoying simple pleasures like good food, good wine and pretty flowers. We meandered through the narrow streets of Aix's market this morning, croissant in hand, and saw fruit that we've never seen and tasted like we've never tasted. The strawberries, the apricots, the canteloupe, the raspberries, the cherries. You name it they had it and it was like none of us have ever had the pleasure of tasting back home. Typically, we bought a baguette, some cheese, prosciutto and the aforementioned incredible fruit. We also scooped a bottle of rose wine for 5 euros! A bottle! The corkscrew we had to ... read more

Left Paris today and headed to Gare de Lyon to catch the TGV train to Avignon. Our train was a few minutes late but whew! once we got on we flew. The TGV trains are France's super fast ones so after being on the Eurostar and the TGV the other trains we take are going to seem so slow - like the Little Engine That Could! Train travel in Europe is very civilized if you discount the dogs and cats on board. I'm all for animals but it was like Noah's Ark. I went to the loo and there was a cat on a leash in the aisle! Naturally I petted the kitty and felt an ache for 'Scoff. As we were whipping by the French countryside we realized we forgot our main guidebook for Provence. ... read more

Belgians are weird, they put mayonaise on their fries and charge people to use the restrooms. They at least did Brugge right. It's a town straight from Walt Disney fairy tale. With towers and turrets, ivy covered old walls, swans swimming in the calm river that meanders through town, stone bridges, and windmills at the edge of town. I wouldn't be surprised if I had bumped into Cinderella, having lost her glass slipper yet again. During the day hordes of tourists fill its narrow streets and alleys, in the cool evenings the locals and tourists alike bring their children to the grandest square I've seen yet to listen to the chimes of the bell tower. We spent two days there, just relaxing. Well, sort of. We went hunting for Chris' Birkenstock and we probably visited every ... read more

Sorry for the lack of updates in the past few days. As of our last update, we were in San Sebastian. We had a blast there and really enjoyed the town there. Unfortunately, the weather was not very aggreeable and therefore we were not able to enjoy the beaches everyone told us about. But we enjoyed our time there nonetheless. After San Sebastian, we took one of the most uncomfortable buses north to Bilbao. This was only a quick stopover because our flight left from there the following morning. While we were there we did see the Guggenheim that Frank Gehry designed. It is a pretty remarkable building to see in person. The following day we left Bilbao and flew to Barcelona. We had such a great time here. We went to La Sagrada Familia the ... read more

This past weekend I went with Lenny, Brian, Meredith, Mike, Dylan and Hunter to southern France. The plan was to catch a train on Friday and ride through the night to Agde, the small town in which the Tour de France was taking place. After much debate, we determined that it would be more cost effective to take a taxi for 5 and a half hours to Nice instead, before heading to Agde. Now that's riding in style! (We still had to take the night train on to Agde, but it was alright.) Had a great time in Agde. Arrived around 6 a.m. and were the second group of people to line up to watch the race. Grabbed a quick breakfast at a nearby cafe and waited for the race to begin, beer in hand. Before ... read more

Luberon: Monday July 18- Wed 20 After the wedding we planned to take a couple days in the countryside as we drove up to Michèle’s house. We wanted to give our friends time to recover after the wedding and I thought it would be a good idea to see the Luberon since Matthieu had recommended it. He said it was even more beautiful than Ardèche. It certainly was beautiful and we found the most gorgeous little bed & breakfast, called a chamber d’hôte. The couple who owns it inherited the land with a large barn on it which they worked very hard to convert into their home. One end of the building has become the room they rent out to tourists. They were very warm and welcoming and we felt very at home. The vineyards surrounding ... read more

Fréjus: arrived Friday 15, wedding Sat 16 The train ride south across France was just as beautiful and thrilling as I remembered. We took the TGV which stands for Train Grand Vitesse. I like how it sounds when translated badly: Train Big Speed. The countryside really is spectacular and I am always happy to leave a big city. We were actually going so fast that I didn’t notice how far we had gone until we passed Valence, which is south of where I lived. My host family, the Montalons, live near some towns that can be recognized from the train, or at least, the spires of the town churches can be recognized, since the TGV tracks are down in a kind of ditch through a good portion of the area I lived in. The people who ... read more
