We started Sunday at Avignon’s market. We looked around at all the stalls. June Bug liked the fish. She kept telling me she saw Nemo. David liked the bunny carcasses. They looked just like bunnies (heads and ears still attached), except that they were fleshy and dead instead of being warm and fuzzy. He wanted to point them out to June Bug, but I begged him not to. I liked looking at the sweets, and we left with two little pineapple-coconut cakes. (Sorry guys, no stinky fish or rabbit carcasses today!) As we headed out of the Market, June Bug wiped her eyes with her sunscreen-drenched hands and caused herself a lot of anguish. A florist saw her crying and gave her a rose to cheer her up. I’m the kind of person who always travels ... read more

We started our day with a free continental breakfast at the hotel. June Bug was enjoying her plateful of croissants, fruit, and cheeses when she said, “What I look like a vegetarian?” I laughed out loud. That was the first time I had ever heard her use the word vegetarian. We headed off for the center of town. Avignon is surrounded by a pretty city wall and the Palace of the Popes is visible from far away. By the time we arrived all the obvious parking just outside the city walls was taken, so we spent a long time weaving in and out of narrow streets searching for a parking garage. Eventually we found a parking garage right under the Papal Palace, which is where we were going anyway. Perfect! The last time we were in ... read more

I'm in Avignon for the day. We're really staying in Marseille but its only an hour train ride. Evita came with me for a little bit but got quickly bored and ran through the castle,,,she took the train back to Marseille because she wanted to go to the beach so I'm here alone. She's not at all interested in art, architecture, or history so it's been a struggle. She doesn't have the stamina and is ready to crash by 10 every night. Avignon is beautiful It's retained a lot of it's medieval flavor. The whole town is walled with winding streets that have their original names Street of butchers, flower street etc. It's hot here too. This is heart of Provence and the big things here are lavender and cicadas. Don't get the bug thing but ... read more

Bonjour... We arrived in Avignon safely after a quick trip down on the Teh Zeh Veh. When we got off the train, we almost got blown over by the wind. Ah yes, the famous Mistral was still going strong, but that didn't dampen our enthusiasm... for Avignon that is We took a taxi in to the Hotel Danieli because we simply couldn't be bothered lugging them onto a bus... As it turns out, the hotel didn't have a lift and we had to carry our luggage all they way up about 40 steps... Other than that the place wasn't so bad for a 2-star establishment. We were staying in the heart of the old town, inside the old city walls, so we didn't need to take any transport at all. We had lunch in the main ... read more

Well after having the song "Sur le pont d'Avignon" in my head for the past 4 months, I finally went. We were only there for a day but we made the best of it. Only half the bridge is still standing and we also saw the Palais de Papes. Beautiful city...but kind of sad because it was the last day with my family!!... read more

Today I went on a field trip to Avignon with my art history class. Thankfully we had nice weather for it. It took about an hour to get there. We immediately went to the Petit Palais, right across the place from the Palais des Papes. The big Palais is amazing. It looks like an old medieval fortress. And the popes ruled from here for a century- right here! It's a pretty amazing thing to contemplate. The Petit Palais was where the bishop and cardinal used to live, and now it's an art museum. The Louvre took most of the important stuff, but Avignon still has a Bottecelli Madonna and Child which was very nice. We had some time for lunch before our tour of the Palais des Papes, so Mollie and I got some lunch along ... read more

We weren't actually in Avignon, we were in a town 20 minutes south called Arles. My mother's other love interest, Rick Steves (this became a running joke), recommended Arles as a place to visit so that is where we went. She began referring to R.S. as "him" and would put out statements such as "he doesn't recommend going there." Finally I asked her (jokingly) if there was something she needed to tell my dad. So that is why Rick Steves is now my mom's pretend boyfriend. Arles was actually a really interesting town. I had no idea where I was going, I just got on the train with my mom but she said that there were Roman ruins in the town. We got there and walked around and came across a cafe that looked really familiar....turns ... read more

We are still in Arles. Yesterday we ventured by bus to a seaside town called les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Its also French cowboy country and home to wild horses and flamingoes! It is a very unique place, full of tourists especially gypsys. The gypsys pilgrimage to St M's to honor their patron saint Sarah. The story goes that Sarah traveled by sea with Mary Magdalene and Mary Jacoby about 40 AC and washed ashore their. Sarah was a peasant girl. The beaches were beautiful but we quickly grew tired. After thinking we were going to tour the St M's church we entered into a spiraling up medievil stairwell to a fortress like balcony. Many where climbing further by climbing the roof too for a better view which was already good. After I climbed up it was a bigger ... read more

We are in Arles about from Avignon. Home to Vincent Van gogh and where he cut his ear off. I'm using our hotel computer which has a french key board, is a Mac, and an older model. As in Germany writng is a slow process. Yesterday our train bgan to follow the Rhone which is beautiful? The climate here is aired but there is a nice breeze. Unfortunately we missed their famous bull fights for this week. But tomorrow is their market day. We have wandered around looking at the provencial clothes, ceramics, spices and soaps. There is a little motorized train we picked up at the Roman Colseum which is next to our very cute hotel we happened upon because Jenee needed some place to go the bathroom and a local merchant directed us. We ... read more
