Apologies for publishing my last 2 blog entries out of order....still catching up! Last night our barge was moored on the River Rhone at Arles with a view up the river and of the walls of the town. We took a 10km trip round the backblocks of Arles to the Pont de Langlois immortalized in a Van Gogh painting. We had 3 hours to explore the city of Arles, another one dating back to Roman times – beautiful amphitheatre, Eglise St Trophime, Espace de van Gogh, ruins of Roman baths etc. We rode back to the barge, now moored outside the town of St Gilles, through fields of salt-tolerant rice and native flora & fauna including some amazing white snails sitting on vegetation in the canals along the side of the road. After we arrived at ... read more

Sorry if this is sounding repetitive but as the dawn arrived we could already tell it was going to be another hot day.So it was breakfast indoors again which is a bit of a shame but actually afternoon shade when its pre dinner drinks time is really a more enjoyable time to be outdoors on the balcony. We were up a bit earlier today than yesterday as we discovered that cruising around taking in the sights and spending time walking to soak up the laid back atmosphere, time can pass by very quickly. An area of interest to us is the Camargue,a wetland west of AeP where the Rhone River flows into the Mediterranean Sea.It is well known for bird watching and there are flamingos in the area.It is also the area where bulls are raised for ... read more

Marseille, Arles, Avignon in Southern France 9 and 10 Aug 2013 After driving towards Marseille (pronounced Marsay) just before lunch, we hit the bumper to bumper traffic of the French Riviera in summer holidays again. We crawled along but finally got to the motorway and the traffic started to flow again. We knew Marseille was a big city and didn’t have a detailed map of it. When we arrived we drove around and around to try to find a suitable park. There were plenty of under-cover parks but we are just over 3 m high so they are not suitable. We drove through the waterfront area where it was absolutely packed with people. There were wall-to-walk restaurants, multiple tour groups being lead by tour guides holding up an umbrella or tassel on a stick so that ... read more

Tuesday July 23 to Saturday July 17 OK so catch up time again. We have been relatively slack over the past few days since our crunch day in Cinque Terre. Tuesday was washing day in the morning – and meant getting some use out of our balcony and our swimming pool and the beaches (such as they are), but somehow, we still do a fair bit of walking. Wednesday was much the same. BTW, our passports caught up with us on Tuesday so we can sleep a bit easier ….. Lunch and afternoon tea and supper was spent on our balcony. Shaded and breezy to relieve the hot. All up, Sestri was brilliant. So Thursday was another big train day. What a mix up! Our first leg was a cock-up. We actually had first class tickets ... read more

Arles On this morning we headed west, retracing our route to Aix-en-Provence and from there on to Arles. The trip was about 250km and, for the most part featured tidy farmlands. The exception occurs where the Autoroute du Soleil cuts north through some fairly dramatic mountain geography just west of Coudoux. It then settles down again into farmland and I was surprised at how big a role mixed farming plays in this part of France. Arles lies along the Rhone River and dates back to the time of the Romans. Evidence of Roman habitation exists in a partially restored amphitheater and a coliseum which lie within a long stone's throw of each other. I was very keen on seeing the city because it was here that Van Gogh lived in 1888 and where he tried to ... read more

Currently I am sitting in the departure lounge at Marseille airport waiting for my flight. There is no WiFi access here, so I will have to send this later, but I can still tell you about my day today. It was cold and very windy all day. I bundled up and braved the elements, but didn't spend as much time out of doors as I had planned. That was partly because of the weather and partly because there is not much open around here on Sundays in late October. I checked out of the hotel in Arles and drove north along the Rhone river to Avignon. When I got out of the car, my cap blew off and I had chase it down the parking lot. One of the things I wanted to experience in Avignon ... read more

There was no rain today, but it was chilly because of the Mistral. (That is what the French call the strong wind that blows through this part of the country.) This morning I went to the weekly market and, as expected, there were a lot of fish. (See picture) I bought some picnic items and then wandered around the old part of Arles. In the main square of Arles is the "Yellow House" that was painted by Vincent van Gogh when he was here. (See picture) There are plaques scattered around the city that identify sites where van Gogh painted certain pictures. This was the only one that I came across today. I visited the Roman Theater and Roman Arena. (See picture of the latter with gladiator training in progress!) The arena is still used for ... read more

It drizzled pretty much all day today, but that did not keep me from doing what I planned to do. After breakfast I drove about an hour outside of Arles to see the Roman aqueduct at Pont du Gard. I took several photographs, but without people it is hard to appreciate how big it is. On summer weekends Pont du Gard can be quite crowded, apparently, but on a rainy October morning, there were not many visitors. Still, I was pleased to see it, not least because this is another place that my father visited in 1945. (See comparison photographs) There is also a very good museum (with signs in four languages!) And I spent a good couple of hours there learning more about this particular aqueduct and Roman aqueducts in general. The engineering prowess that ... read more

So, some of you maybe wondering, "Why Martigues?" The answer is that my father was stationed here in the US Army during World War II. Among his memorabilia from that time are two pictures of Martigues. I was interested in seeing the town, but also I thought I would try to find the places that the pictures were taken. This morning, after breakfast, I wandered around the little town and, to my surprise, I quickly found the locations of those pictures. The first one is a photograph and it is easy to see the church belltower and the building in the foreground are clearly the same. (See first set of photos) The other picture from Dad's collection is a postcard and I was able to find the spot where the artist sat when he painted it. ... read more
