Alright so the bloody Internet at the Mirabeau Apartments decided to pack up about and French efficiency dictates that it will take at least eight working hours to repair... which translates to about 3 days and counting. So, before I forget everything I decided to bite the bullet and head down here to Carrefour Cafe just down my street Rue Roux Alpheran. Very nice outdoor seating with one hour of free wifi as long as you buy something. So, a couple of glasses of local red wine down the hatch, here I am. So lets begin right where I left off - start of last weekend about to head to Nice and Monaco. So we had the choice of taking the bus or the train and I was really glad to have chosen the former. They ... read more

As predicted, I'm useless at updating this shit as things happen. As a result, I'm going to have to rely solely on my memory to recount the last 4 or 5 days, which have unfortunately been blurred in several places and times due to far too many pre-outing gin and tonics. Anyways here goes: Tuesday 3rd of June was the second day of classes. To be honest, these classes are a little dull and its far too hard to actually concentrate for 4 hours straight, especially when Mme Calvet could probably recite all of Shakespeare's works in one sitting without ever pausing. Obviously if she's talking I get to improve my listening skills but as far as trying to become more lucid orally there hasn't been much opportunity. I actually became a pseudo-hero for the class ... read more

So here we are. The first time I have actually sat down to pen my thoughts in god knows how long and in all honesty, I'm pretty excited to see what will emerge! I was actually hoping I would get around to doing this a few days ago so I guess I'll make up for it by providing a quick executive summary of the past week. I arrived in France on the 29th of May, ready to embark on a 2 month long immersion around the south in the beautiful Provencial town of Aix-En-Provence. However, no sooner than had I stepped off the plane at Marseille airport did I realize that my precious, priceless and all-important Green Card was nowhere to be found. That one insignificant little piece of plastic that was permanently nestled safe and ... read more

It is amazing that despite France being rather expensive overall, a good bottle of wine could run you no more than 7 Euros, whereas in Hong Kong these cost you an arm and a leg. We’ve spend the last few days at the Chateaux de Bradshaw, located in the quaint town of Fayence (know for its boulangeries back in Medieval times) half an hour outside of Nice in Provence. Picture your quintessential house in the South of France - and this is it. Walls covered with ivy and vines, great big green lawns enclosed in large walls of manicured bushes. Pebbled driveways, hanging flower pots, shuttered windows, bottles and bottles of wine. No internet, no sounds, no nothing besides the voices of your good friends relaxing on more cheeses than any American could handle. After the ... read more

Now what kind of a trip to the Cote d’Azur, French Riviera, the South of France, Aix en Provence, home of L’Occitane, would be complete without a trip to Grasse, home of famed parfumeries? Let me first start by laying to rest the age-long question of “Are the French really dirty?” Now just for the record, I love French people. Some of my favorite people in the world are French, some of my closest friends are French, and I absolutely love French men. However, why do you think France is so renowned for their perfumes? Back in the day, French royalty didn’t bathe, as bathing was seen only for the dirty. And to compensate for this, perfumes were created to keep them smelling oh so enchanting. So there you have it, it is true. There is ... read more

Well we solved the problem with the photos one day and ran into another problem another day; it seems the computer we,re using wont allow us to access the camera; ce,st la vie; Salon is great; we went to Aix this morning and were really disappointed; Yesterday we went to Avignon and had a very enjoyable day; I have had a bit of slight deli belly since Toulouse (touloose??) so since arriving we have steered clear of heavy french food; On monday we ate Italian (excellent ingredients made fresh in the deli which doubles as a restaurant at night) and last night we ate chinese/vietnamese; Again excellent; the last 2 days have been very sunny; in fact today it has hit 20 degrees; we are actually hot; Everyone else still wears coats; We must be the ... read more

Wednesday I had no classes, so Stephanie and I got revved up for a big day of sightseeing. We went to the Moulin Rouge, then to the Champs Elysees, and the Jardins du Luxembourg near my school. We ate dinner at Odeon and went to Frog and Princess, then off to the Eiffel Tower! The top floor was open, so for the second time I was up on it but this time, even higher. The views were that much more amazing, and we enjoyed the sparkling sensation that is the towering monument. Thursday I had class, but we enjoyed crepes and she took off to the airport. Friday I had my favorite falafel from the Marais, and was extremely excited about my new camera! (thank you Dad!) I was very good about not eating meat and ... read more

We went to Aix-en-Provence last Saturday, it took a couple hours to get there by bus but it was really interesting and very pretty! First we walked around the city and were shown the important tourist destinations. This excursion was hard for me because everything was explained in French so I picked up on it a little bit, but I was the only American with some Swiss students and a lot of Japanese students, so nothing was explained in English. There is a huge fountain in the center of town that is really pretty, and trees line streets and Im sure its beautiful when they are blooming! Since it was a Saturday, they had lots of outdoor markets. There were markets for flowers, food, and clothing and they were really big! Later we stopped and had ... read more
