I am tempted to start this entry with a clearly untrue but still quite heartfelt “Only in France!” Let me elaborate. It’s January in Lille. Now, Lille winters are generally substantially milder than Ohio or Pennsylvania winters. It does not get as cold - in fact, it rarely gets down to freezing. Rather than snowing, it rains…which is miserable, but that is beside the point. The point, rather, was that this particular winter WAS cold. Uncharacteristically so. Freezingly so. For about two weeks, it got cold enough for the ever-present puddles that gathered in uneven spots in pavement and where there were missing cobblestones froze and remained frozen. Rain froze, it sleeted, it snowed. Lungs, hands, and noses felt the stinging, burning sensation of sub-zero temperatures. Normally, this would not bother me at all - au ... read more

Lille was the first place that we went to visit outside of Paris, since we thought we had better start to get some more use of our train tickets. The resort has a free bus that takes you to the local train station, so that was handy. After wandering around for a while in the wrong direction, we finally located the town to have a look at. After that we stumbled across all sorts of interesting churches and buildings on our way around. And the Christmas market was well worth all the effort, they really went all out with decorating the whole area and Mum wanted to take half the town home. After doing the Christmas market we then went to the ginourmous Eurolille, their monster shopping centre that they advertise everywhere. This was pretty impressive, ... read more

One week it's sun and snow from a distance and the next it's in the thick of the swirly white stuff! In a particularly busy travel period of weekend trips it was up early Saturday morning and off to St Pancras for the Eurostar to Lille in France. This has to be the best invention in the world. Catch the tube to Kings Cross St Pancras, be ready 30 mins before departure, through French customs before boarding the train and an hour or so later you are walking out in the middle of town in a completely different world (with much better food). As Astrid and I only had 2 days to make the most of our weekend in Lille we found our hotel (right near the station) to drop off the bags before heading into ... read more

SUBJECT: RISE AND SHINE I couldn’t tell you why, but I awoke the other morning at just after five o’clock. And it wasn’t as though I groggily woke up, rolled over, checked the time, and became instantly annoyed at having woken up so early. I felt completely awake and ready to start the day. Rather than fight it and try to force myself to go back to sleep, I decided to roll with it. I got up, brushed my teeth, put in my contacts, got dressed, and left my apartment. It was dark outside. The only light came from the dim, yellow-orange streetlights and the green LED crosses that signify a pharmacy. Not a soul was out and about. The usually busy, bustling street on which I live was like a dark shell of itself. The ... read more

ok, i know im terrible at updating my blog. but i was on vacation in italy, and then my computer's hard drive crashed and so it had to be sent away and then i decided to shorten my stay to only a semester so i was incredibly busy dealing with all of that paperwork and whatnot, my apologies. my vacation was great. my mom arrived in lille saturday night and we went and had a nice meal out together before returning to my tiny room where we both slept! it was surprisingly comfortable, i slept on the floor and my mom got the bed and it worked out fine. on sunday we got up and went to wazemmes, the open air market. we bought hats and gloves and also some veggies for dinner that night. we ... read more

After a day, I’m not sure four days here will be too long. The people have been amazing so far. There’s a huge language barrier, I didn’t realize Gaspard wasn’t fluent in English. We went to hang out with some of his friends last night who thought it would be fun to speak English all night, mostly for my benefit, but I think people like to show off their multi-linguality. Today I wandered around myself, and went to Vieux Lille. I passed a friterie, which, if you know my favorite food, you know how excited I was. Gaspard tells me that in Lille, they cook fries in the Belgium style. They heat them through first, and then, when someone orders them, they cook them a second time in the frier to crisp them. Really the best ... read more

I decided to leave my last place in Sourdeval a few days early, as I’ve discovered that 2 weeks is an ample amount of time to live with one family. The kids seemed upset that I was leaving early, and had their own ways of showing it. On my last day, the little five-year-old kept coming into my/his room, and just hanging about the doorway, not really doing anything, just talking nonsense. I went to the bathroom across the hall, and heard a knock on my bedroom door. “Can I come in?” he chirped. Shaking my head, and knowing I might regret speaking up, I told Finlay that I was in the bathroom. Outside the door, I could audibly hear the wheels in his head turning. Then, after a pregnant pause, he says, “did you know ... read more

i only have 4 more days left of school before my first vacation! i'm very excited. school here is interesting and everything, but i'd prefer traveling any day. my mom is coming and we're going to florence and milan together. it's going to be absolutely splendid. but enough about the future, what is there to say about my last week or so in lille? hmm...not much actually. i've been taking it very easy, doing some homework, sticking to my running schedule, cooking delicious meals in my room, just enjoying life and trying not to be stressed. i have to write my first real french paper for a class next week.....it's an explication du texte, and i haven't a clue what to do exactly because it's the ONE teacher that i can hardly understand because he mumbles....in ... read more

I believe I have already described my landlord once. To quote myself (if I may) a few blog entries earlier: “A short, stocky man in his upper fifties gentle, smiling eyes and a white ponytail…my landlord is a very nice and helpful man. He offered me a ride home the day I signed the lease, which I thought was nice, and he also brought me a small round table and two chairs (which I put on the right wall right after the bathroom door but before the kitchen nook), a (very crooked but still functional) bookcase, on which I put my folded clothes, and a full-length mirror. He is gentle, friendly, and owns several apartments around the Lille Métropole, which he rents out and cares for with his wife, who is equally sweet and personable.” I ... read more

I’m not sure if I have written about this before or not, but it merits a second entry if in fact it has had a first. The subject: the debit/credit card. There are several differences between a French bank card and an American one. First, you cannot choose your pin with a French bank card, nor can you change it. Also, it does not come in the mail. Instead, you get a letter in the mail about a week after ordering it telling you that you can stop into your bank and pick it up. The biggest difference, though, is what the French call “la puce” - the chip. French cards have a small electronic chip built into them that stores their data. Therefore, when you pay for something at a grocery store or a restaurant, ... read more
