Caen to Bayeux and exploring Bayeux

November 12 – Bayeux – I had a busy day today. I got checked out of my room in Caen and took the bus to Baeux. I took the bus because the train went to the train station outside of town and I couldn’t check into my hotel room till 5PM so I wanted to go to the city center where I could explore things a bit as well as check out the information available from the tourist bureau. Then I would explore a bit more and maybe find a local bus that would take me a bit nearer to my hotel.

The train and bus lines travel almost on the line between Caen and Bayeux, that the English and Germans fought it out while the English and Canadians were trying to take Caen. Bayeux was spared because the Germans sent to defend it had to turn back to meet the English and Canadian attack. Caen was not so lucky it was reduced to rubble by Allied bombing and street fighting.

I am staying in the Premiere Classe Bayeux at Chemin De La Gambette. It is also on the outskirts of town as well but had pretty good reviews. I figured I could look around the town a bit and then get a taxi to the hotel.

The plan worked out ok till I got to the “get a taxi” part. Although there was a place in a parking lot by the Hotel de Ville (town hall), in the entire hour and a half I was in the city center I never saw a taxi.

So I go the opportunity for another of those “just a 10 minute walk” that Europeans are so fond of expecting you to take. A “10 minute walk” may be just fine if all you are doing is walking but a 10 minute walk while you are dragging your suitcase and carrying a heavy computer bag is quite a different matter. I did exactly that though, and got to the hotel about 16:30 which I thought would be just fine as I could just wait in the lobby till 5PM to check in. Not So !!!

In their webpage the hotel said that they only booked rooms from 7 to 11 in the morning and again from 5 till 9PM. What they failed to mention was that the door would be locked and no one around until 5PM if that was when I was checking in, which it was.

So I was locked out and had to wait outside in the cold till they unlocked the door at 5PM and I could come in and register. Grrrrrr. What kind of stupid deal is that?!!

So if anyone is considering using this hotel make sure you have a car because it is too far out unless you want to call a taxi each time and also if you are locked out waiting to register you can wait in your car instead of sitting on your suitcase looking ridiculous.

Just thank God it wasn’t raining.

The walk isn't too bad once you are able to check in and leave your luggage though.

So anyway I finally got in and set up in my room. It is actually a very nice and clean room and so far tonight at least it is very quiet.

To get to the reason I am here though, I got a bunch of brochures from the tourist bureau and sent an email to the D Day landing beaches tours ( www.dday-tours.fr ) , and booked a tour for Wednesday the 14^th for the half day tour that departs at 1:30 PM. It visits Arromanches, the German battery at Longues-Sur-Mur, the US cemetery, Omaha Beach and Point Du Hoc. It cost €43, and they will pick me up at my hotel.

Tomorrow I will walk over to the Musee Memorial De La Batille De Normandie on Blvd Fabian Ware and tour it. Then I will catch their little “bybus” local circuit bus Ligne 1 (blue) to the Gare (train station) where I will catch the Ligne 2 (pink bus) to the museum for the Bayeux Tapestry at 13 bis rue de Nesmond. I don’t know if the Ligne 2 will let me off at it but I should be able to get off near it.

So that’s the plan.

I may have been a bit optimistic in my travel plans this trip. I was planning on going on to Italy and Greece, and even have a return ticket from Athens. And here I am much as the Allies back in 44. Bogged down off the beaches in Normandy. One thing is for sure….there are plenty of museums around here. I think I could invest most of a month trying to see them without much difficulty.

To get off on an entirely different subject, it’s funny what I miss when I am traveling. I don’t miss TV at all, or even SuperWalmart. I miss my sister Annette’s cooking. It was sooooooo good.

12 novembre - Bayeux - J'ai eu une journée bien remplie aujourd'hui. J'ai eu les clés de ma chambre à Caen et pris le bus pour Baeux. J'ai pris le bus parce que le train est allé à la gare en dehors de la ville et je n'ai pas pu vérifier dans ma chambre d'hôtel jusqu'à 17 heures si je voulais aller au centre-ville où j'ai pu explorer un peu les choses, ainsi que de vérifier les informations disponibles auprès de l'office du tourisme. Ensuite, je voudrais explorer un peu plus et peut-être trouver un bus local qui me prendrait un peu plus près de mon hôtel.
Le train et les lignes de bus voyager presque sur la ligne entre Caen et Bayeux, que les Anglais et les Allemands se sont affrontés tandis que les Anglais et les Canadiens tentaient de s'emparer de Caen. Bayeux a été épargnée parce que les Allemands envoyés pour défendre il a dû rebrousser chemin pour répondre à l'attaque anglaise et canadienne. Caen n'a pas cette chance, il a été aplati par les bombardements alliés.
Je reste à l'avant-première à Bayeux Classe Chemin De La Gambette. Il est également à la périphérie de la ville mais aussi eu des critiques très bonnes. J'ai pensé que je pourrais regarder autour de la ville un peu et puis prendre un taxi jusqu'à l'hôtel.
Le plan s'est bien passé jusqu'à ce que je suis arrivé au "prendre un taxi" partie. Bien qu'il y ait une place dans un parking par l'Hôtel de Ville (mairie), à ​​l'heure entière et demi j'étais dans le centre-ville, je n'ai jamais vu un taxi.
Donc je vais la possibilité pour un autre de ces «juste une promenade de 10 minutes" que les Européens sont si friands d'attendre que vous preniez. Une «promenade de 10 minutes» peut être très bien si tout ce que vous faites marche, mais 10 minutes à pied tandis que vous faites glisser votre valise et un sac d'ordinateur lourde est une tout autre affaire. J'ai fait exactement ce que cependant, et arrivés à l'hôtel vers 16.30 qui je pensais être très bien comme je pouvais attendre dans le hall jusqu'à 17 heures de check-in Not So!
Dans leur page web de l'hôtel dit qu'ils ne réservé des chambres de 7 à 11 heures du matin et à nouveau du 5 au 21 heures. Ce qu'ils n'ont pas de mentionner que la porte serait verrouillée et personne autour de jusqu'à 17 heures si cela a été quand je suis arrivé, où il était.
J'ai donc été verrouillé et a dû attendre dehors dans le froid jusqu'à ce qu'ils ouvrit la porte à 17 heures et je pouvais venir et de vous inscrire. Grrrrrr. Quel genre d'affaire stupide, c'est ça?!
Donc, si quelqu'un envisage d'utiliser cet hôtel assurez-vous que vous avez une voiture, car il est trop loin, sauf si vous voulez appeler un taxi à chaque fois et aussi si vous êtes bloqué en attente de vous inscrire, vous pouvez attendre dans votre voiture au lieu de rester assis sur votre valise ridicule.
Juste Dieu merci il ne pleuvait pas.
Donc de toute façon je me suis finalement arrivés et mis en place dans ma chambre. Il est en fait une très belle chambre, propre et jusqu'à ce soir au moins, il est très calme.
Pour accéder à la raison pour laquelle je suis ici, quoique, j'ai reçu un tas de brochures de l'office du tourisme et a envoyé un courriel aux D Day Tours plages du débarquement (www.dday-tours.fr) et nous avons réservé une excursion pour mercredi le 14e la demi-journée qui part à 1:30 PM. Demain, je vais marcher sur le Musée Mémorial De La Batille De Normandie sur le boulevard Fabian Ware et en faire le tour. Ensuite, je vais reprendre leur petit "bybus" circuit local de bus Ligne 1 (bleu) à la gare (gare) où je vais attraper la Ligne 2 (bus rose) au musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux à 13 bis rue Nesmond de. Je ne sais pas si les 2 Ligne me laisser descendre à elle, mais je devrais être capable de descendre à proximité de celui-ci.
Donc, c'est le plan.
J'ai peut-être été un peu trop optimiste dans mon projet de voyage de ce voyage. J'avais l'intention de passer à l'Italie et la Grèce, et même avoir un billet de retour d'Athènes. Et là, je suis beaucoup plus que les Alliés dans le dos 44. S'enliser au large des plages de Normandie. Une chose est sûre .... il ya beaucoup de musées ici. Je pense que je pourrais investir plus d'un mois pour essayer de les voir sans trop de difficulté.
Pour descendre sur un tout autre sujet, c'est drôle ce qui me manque quand je suis en voyage. Je ne regrette pas du tout la télévision, ou même SuperWalmart. Je m'ennuie de ma cuisine Annette sœur. Il était hyper bien.

Premiere Classe room. a clean comfortable room and at a good rate. A bit out of town but plenty of free parking if you have a car. It had good internet as well. Small bathroom though.
