The town of Fontainebleau can be reached from Paris taking the train from Gare de Lyon station. Exiting the station on arrival, we had to wander about a bit before finding the nearby bus stops. Bus number 1 or 34 leaves frequently and goes by the château in just a few minutes. The château and the grounds are beautiful and well worth a visit. The first references to the Château de Fontainebleau date back to the 12th century. Since then, all the kings of France have lived in the palace, and have continuously enlarged and embellished it. It is a unique example of a royal residence, loved and cherished for over eight centuries. The Apartments of the sovereigns evoke all the pomp and splendour of the French court; antechamber, drawing rooms, ceremonial rooms, the Council Room and ... read more

We’re going home. Hard to believe this day has arrived. What a wonderful trip. We have our last sightseeing visit of Paris before that dreaded long haul flight. The day is fine and just the right temperature for wandering the streets of Paris. But first we have to close our bags and check out. Once the bags are closed we check the weight. Amazing. Both bags are under 20 kgs. As we close the door of another hotel room for the final time we don’t feel sad, we feel excited about our home coming. We look forward to seeing our garden wake up with the arrival of spring. Dragging wheeled bags over paving is rather laborious but the trip to the railway station doesn’t seem to take that long. Perhaps there is a spring in our ... read more

One of my favourite districts in Paris is Montmartre. Primarily known for its artistic history, the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré-Coeur on the summit, and as a nightclub district, including La Chat Noir and the Moulin Rouge. Near the end of the 19th century, many artists had studios or worked in or around Montmartre, including Amedeo Modigliani, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Suzanne Valadon, Pablo Picasso, and Vincent Van Gogh. Today it is still a bustling, thriving area filled with cafés, galleries, and artists roaming the squares either trying to sell their work or offering to draw your portrait. We started our day early, taking the Metro to near the bottom of Montmartre. You can either climb the MANY steps up towards the Basilica, or take the funicular, which is what we chose today. ... read more

Our last full day in Paris, it is Saturday, it is fine, and we have things to do. First up a lunch date. We walk to our local railway station and buy a one day rail pass. Today we’ll use it to the max. We have things to do and places to see. We have decided to have lunch somewhere on the Left Bank. There is a cooling breeze so we look for a sheltered restaurant that offers a menu to fit our appetite and wallet. We choose a restaurant that looks across the Seine to Notre Dame. A very friendly waiter assists us to our table and leaves English language menus. A nearby diner lights the first of many cigarettes so we move down wind of him. The waiter returns and realizes we have moved. ... read more

Our stay in Paris is being blessed by perfect sightseeing weather. It is fine with comfortable temperatures. Other parts of Europe are into very high temperatures while in the United Kingdom wave upon wave of cold fronts is sweeping through. We’ll start the day by trying out the hotel laundry system. The machines are similiar to those in the Troyes laundromat so it all looks straight forward. We need to exchange money for tokens. Easy. We insert the coins and get the tokens, one for washing, one for drying. Twenty minutes later the wash is finished. Problem. Our other token won’t fit the dryer. These companies have it all their own way. We need more tokens, this time with a groove across them, similar to the car wash tokens in Italy. We know what you’re thinking. ... read more

We started out walking yesterday, following a route towards the Louvre, recommended by our Intervac home exchange host that would take us past a nice variety of various little shops and cafés. It was nice just being out and about, reacquainting ourselves with the Paris we fell in love with four years ago. Our first stop was at the Louvre metro station in Les Halles. After much online research, we decided to buy the Navigo mois decouverte Pass. For 73 Euros, plus 5 Euros for the card, you can travel for the full calendar month across all of Paris, zones 1 to 5, plus out to Versailles, Charles deGaul airport, and even Disneyland Paris should you be so inclined. And that includes travel by bus, Metro and the RER trains. You also need some photos made, ... read more

We sleep in. We have a late breakfast. We publish a blog or two, hope you are enjoying them. We Skype. We plan what to do with the rest of the day. We’re in Paris and we can’t spend the day in a hotel room surrounded by bags of clothes, breakfast items, small appliances, purchases, and an accumulation of debris to be disposed of. Just hope we can open and shut the studio apartment door. A decision has been made. We’ll take the RER train into Paris and wander around some gardens. We choose Jardin des Plantes. It is only a short walk to the railway station and already the day is warming up. We decide on single fare tickets today. Hopefully that will get us to our destination and safely back again. Chatelet is a ... read more

As much forested area in BC has been lost to wild fires this year as in 1966, the worst year ever. And the hot summer season is only half over! So far, the closest fire was only about 5 km away, but was luckily brought under control in a few days, before it reached 2 hectares. But with nearly 200 fires still burning around the province, the air is frequently thick with smoke. So much so that two weeks ago all flights out of Kamloops had to be cancelled. Today, as we drove towards the Kamloops airport, the skies were again thick with smoke. As Rennie and Donna dropped us off at the departure door, I wondered if I would need a ride all the way to Vancouver. But our flight arrived and departed on time, ... read more

July 26 Wednesday Even though I had gone to bed late last night, I still got up early but this time closer to 6 AM. I downloaded all the pictures I took last night and then headed off for breakfast. Not surprising I didn't see anyone from my group. Unfortunately most of the food that was cooked was not to my taste, So I ended up with some ham slices, cheese, and croissants. The orange juice actually was very good. I then left the hotel to go across the street again to the bridge over the Seine River. I took some good pictures of the Eiffel Tower and then headed down to the little island below to get a better picture of the Statue of Liberty. There was a plaque in French but I was able ... read more

The Louvre Museum is huge on the outside, and even bigger on the inside, and our first adventure of the day. We have prebooked tickets to avoid the queues. When we arrive it takes us some time to find where to pick up the tickets, it is from a seedy looking bloke lurking in the shade smoking Guiloises, but he was as good as his word. Then through security and we are in. Andy and I agree to meet at the coffee shop near the entrance in 2:30 hours. Much easier than staying together. The Louvre was originally a defensive fortress and was once the main residences of French kings. It became a museum in 1793 and now exhibits over 73,000 sq.m of artworks. There are around 35,00 artworks on display. The floors are labelled -2, ... read more
