I have a confession to make: I am a travel addict. I thought a trip to Japan would relieve my curiosity about life on the other side of the world, but it has only worsened my condition. I am writing from a country house in the county of Changé - not even in Chartres and too small to have been listed in the Travelblog locations list - and I am 4 days into an 11-month stint as a nanny. While my friends are home building careers and buying condos, I am on the road again, spending my savings and pedalling backwards from any notion of settling I may once have had. "What is your plan?" some people have asked. "What are you looking for?" These are very good questions for which answers have eluded me. I ... read more

Hi everyone Well the riding continues and so does the changing weather conditions! Our last day in Alsace was stunning. We caught a train to Selestat and did a 55km ride through the Alsace Grand Cru wine region exploring many of the gorgeous villages along the way. The weather was perfect and we even got to ride in just our cycling jerseys and shorts. We tried local delicacies being 2 Alsations washed down by 2 Storkies (explanations when we get back)! Unfortunately we couldnt wine taste but did plenty at dinner time complete with choucroute (all sorts of meats and sausages with saurkraut and mustard- yummy). Attached are a couple of piccies of the days ride to make you all jealous. We managed to successfully and with minimal stress to get our bikes and selves to ... read more

Chartes was so impressive. The detail in side and out was extensive. There were many three dimensional scenes with almost life size figures. It still amazes me how artistic they were at a time we call the dark ages. I have to say that this is the church that I feel is most artistic I have ever seen.... read more

Of Kings and Castles Today was our first brush with French royalty. We stayed in our hotel in Tours for only one night. So we were up bright and early this morning, with rucksacks ready to go, a quick bite to eat, and onto the bus. Our guide Michael may be from Ireland, but he speaks with a British accent, and we are all charmed by his vocabulary. Yesterday, he saw some people having a “chin wag.” A what? Once the kids realized that meant “having a chat,” they kept asking Michael, “Are we going to have a chin wag?” So, now we all carry our rucksacks, wear our costumes at the beach, and take our jumpers for the cool nights. Oh yes, and we never miss an opportunity to go to the loo. The agenda ... read more

Friday 9th May Following our full day of visiting the sights we decided to do some tourist housekeeping since today was a standard workday in France, We were forced to use one of the hair-raising underground car parks again. The entrance (and exit) of this one were curved and our car's turning circle was "just:"under the curvature of the down ramp. First stop was the post office and then around to the mobile phone shop to get a new sim card for Marion's mobile. (We are not using global roaming because of the cost, but each country has their own mobile systems and we need to re-organise the phone after each change of country). Returning to the car park we paid for our ticket using the machine (same as in Aus, except these have buttons which ... read more

Yesterday I enjoyed a day trip to Chartre to see the cathedral. It was good whether and I enjoyed seeing what was one of my favorite cathedral's from art history. Like all cathedrals here it was a bit dark, dank and cold....but better to see the stained glass illuminated I suppose. Not much else to report but see the nice pictures attached. I am on my way to Vezelay in the region of Burgundy today. ... read more

From under the Eiffel Tower to the most beautiful Gothic Cathedral.... Phil and I continued on and took a day trip to the infamous Chartres Cathédrale de Notre-Dame(a special merci to the Dimons!) The cathedral is a must see on any visit to France. Only about an hour by train from Paris, and you can see one of the most (if not the most) beautiful examples of Gothic architecture in Europe. There are over 130 stained glass windows (most not even changed since the 13th century) I recommend taking a guided tour or renting the audio tour of the church, we did, and we learned quite a lot about the symbology behind the stained glass and the stone sculptures. It is really a magnificent example of medieval Gothic architecture! Unfortunately we could not take photos inside ... read more

Huzzah, we have already spent a week surrounded by lovely french people, fromages, and gut busting patisseries. Here's the story so far... We set sail from Dover to Calais on a very very dull ferry full of lorry drivers and "others" and of course ourselves. Our excitement shone like a a lighthouse beam in this grey world and we landed on French soil eager to test our driving skills. We headed to Carlepont, (an hour North of Paris) where we planned to spend our first night under canvas at an all-year round campsite. Apart from one inappropriate moment at a service station where both of us marched into the toilet to the sound of "Sexual Healing" being played on the speakers (causing both of us to enter separate cubicles) we arrived in Carlepont unscathed. The shock ... read more

An hour and a half train ride out of Paris one finds a skeletal stone and glass monument (900 years old) rising out of the rolling fields of Chartres. I felt a visit to Chartres Cathedral was a mandatory must do while in Paris. One can study the French gothic in school and pretend to know what you’re talking about or you can experience this ecclesiastical architecture in the first person. The chilling weather followed me to Chartres. The towers were closed due to snow and ice. The Englishman that Rick Steves speaks so highly of cancelled his tour. The stone masonry of the cathedral absorbed what little bit of heat there was leaving the air stingingly sharp to the face and exposed skin. In one of the transepts I found a metal grill in the ... read more
