Friday 31st May Having arrived back from Nantes this morning, after an early lunch I took my bag and headed off on the train to Rennes, where I picked up a rental car for my tour around Brittany. The car was an Opel Corsa – small car, rival to the VW Polo, but not as good, in my opinion. It was OK but lacked power and even in top gear was revving hard at 110 km/h on the motorways. I prefer travelling on the back roads as much as possible, when time allows. You see much more and there is often no traffic. The little French villages are very charming but there sure are a lot of them, each with 30 km/h zones, speed bumps, etc to negotiate. Google maps just loves backroads, heading off the ... read more

Mon Sep 23 Guemene-sur-Scorff is a lovely little town where our friend owns a house to rent. See www.brittanyescapes.com for more info. Walked around town. Unfortunately nearly everything is closed today, but we did find a cafe. Had noisettes (small espresso with milk). The only other customer, a Scotsman, was drinking beer (10 am)Climbed up pathway to old bell tower for view over town.Back home for lunch. Drove to Kernascleden to see chuch with wonderful frescoes. To St Fiacre church with amazing wooden carved screen. Tue Sep 24 Off by 9.15. Stopped in Pont Scorff to visit a special art gallery--some very unusual displays all for sale: jewellry, clothes, paintings, etc.Drove to town of Pont Aven. It had many mills at one time because of the river being restricted and divided. Great market. Almost bought some ... read more
