another late start. Up at 9.30am and off for a run. Another yum scrambled egg with sausages for brekky. We´ve decided to stay here an extra night. We were going to go to Helsinki today and stay there and g oto the airport from there. As it turns out, the hotel we thought was in Helsinki is actually in espoo. My uncle advised us that it would be a nightmare to try and get to the airport from there. As it turns out, there are buses which run from turku direct to the airport and there is one at 4am which will get us there at 6.25am. perfect! We took off for a trip to an electrical goods store, kinda like harvey norman back home. i never checked my video camera before we left oz and ... read more

Today was busy, confusing and fun! It is testing week at school so everyone is supposed to arrive at 10:15 today and tomorrow. I woke up at 8am to get ready and they at 10am I realized I had two free periods at 10:15….dang. I could have slept another two hours! That’s ok though because I found time to write this!!! I went in at 11:45 and went straight to lunch with Saija, Maiju, Lotta, Aapo, and Hannah. I had one period of Math after that, then I came home again to get ready for my Rotex meeting in Turku! (Rotex are the Finnish students that have been on foreign exchange and have now returned! In our district Elina is our Rotex! She went to Australia!) I had a snack then rode my bike to the ... read more

Turku Triumph Europe » Finland » Turku By jessie_eliciaMay 24th 2007Jessie Smith Hey everyone! Sorry for the long delay in writing. I have been busy finishing the pavilion, moving it to Turku, attending the gallery opening, travelling across Scandinavia, moving to Ireland, and starting a new job. Whew. So here's the first bit, the finished pavilion in all its glory, standing triumphantly in Turku for the next three months with an uncertain future beyond that. The erection went fairly smoothly and the press conference was a breeze. It was a very exciting day seeing the opening of the exhibition... here is a small selection of the hundreds I have.... oops, ... read more

Two full weeks of construction and we are now done! I am physically and mentally exhausted and ready for a weekend off but I'm also really happy about how the project turned out. The space feels the same as I had imagined it but the lighting is more spectacular. We packed the two pieces onto two trucks on Tuesday morning and drove them to Turku asap. We worked from about 12 - 9 and were almost done when we went home for dinner. We had a great italian meal at an amazing restaurant and then went out dancing to celebrate. It was like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders that night seeing the structure in place. Wednesday morning we finished up the work in Turku and headed back to Helsinki. We are now ... read more

Hey everyone! Had a busy week so far and have lots of pictures to post for you. I want to start with a little explanation of 'site' for my non-architectural friends and family since I sprung that term on you last week. For each design project we are assigned there is a proposed site for the building to be located on. Normally we go to the site and measure and take pictures of it and the site influences the design of the building. In the case of the sauna project which I mentioned last week this is a hypothetical site as there will be no actual construction happening. In the case of the pavilion we are designing in Turku one design proposal from my classmates and I will be chosen to be constructed. We will be ... read more

The adventure is nearing. After months of searching the internet, traveling to various coastal cities, we found the perfect boat in Finland. It's a 515 Nauticat (currently in dry dock at the Nauticat yard in Turku, just outside Helsinki). Now, we wait until the Baltic Sea thaws, then we set sail! The boat sale was official September 15th, 2006.... read more

On the 7th of September, 2006 - I arrived back in Finland!! I hadn't told anyone in Finland that I was returning, and so when I jumped off the bus near my house I was quite excited to walk in and surprise my parents. However...as I walked toward my street, I saw my dad's car turn into the main road. After checking it really WAS his car, I started waving my arms - turns out both my parents were on their way to town. So I jumped into the car. Not exactly the surprise I was expecting, but I'm sure they were pleased (and shocked) to see me home. Alive and well. So now my life in Finland begins. After meeting up with my sister (my dad and I went to her house, rand the doorbell...and ... read more

Couldn't quite follow my original plan. The night cruise to Helsinki was sold out, so we took the day cruise to Turku (the former capital of Finland). So we had a (very) early start to the day. Much cheaper, but we had to pay for an extra night at a hotel. Cruise arrived 8 p.m., so we decided to spend the night here and take the train to Helsinki in the morning (2 hrs). When we arrived, we realized that it stays daylight here so late that we could've taken the train tonight and still arrived before dark -- no matter how long the day, when the sun is still up at 10 p.m., it's hard to think about going to bed. It was an interesting cruise. Typical cruise ship, but including two car decks, lots ... read more
