What an awesome get away! This tiny island country is small in size and far flung in location, but large and generous in hospitality and majesty! My dear travel pal, Fred, and I enjoyed 7 days of hiking and exploring the Faroes via foot, rental car, ferry and even helicopter! A well developed infrastructure, including sub-sea tunnels, combined with incredibly friendly locals who often spoke Engli... Read Full Entry

Special sheep food

Why would a sheep leave the hillside to come running to a trough? The food brought in by the farmer apparently gives them "lots of energy".

May is the time of year for baby lambs and return of the migrating seabirds, such as the puffin and the noisy but beautiful oystercatcher.

Tunnels

They have a system of utilizing tunnels to travel amongst and within the islands. When in single lane tunnels, there are periodic turn offs so that oncoming traffic can continue. A bit unnerving, but effective.

Riding this ferry was a bit like attending a local sporting event. Families, friends, kids with and without parents - all chatting and moving about and enjoying the time on the water. Cafes, tables, ticket kiosk, comfy seats - made for a nice 2 hour ride from Suduroy back to the capitol, Torshavn.

Lift off feels like floating on a puffy cloud. Such a fun way to see the beautiful islands! In fact, I was so excited that I disembarked with my headphones on and only remembered after taking this photo.

The Faroe Islands have reportedly the best and healthiest salmon in the world. They have sole rights to their surrounding waters for fishing wild salmon. It is indeed delicious! This photo shows just a few of the round holding areas which can be viewed all around the islands. The bulk of their catch goes for sale to Russia.

Comin in for a landing

7 days in the Faroes
I definitely would have enjoyed a longer stay, but felt that I saw quite a bit and experienced the Faroes in 7 days. There were other hikes and islands I would like to have explored, as well as a boat ride to see the bird cliffs if we had more time. We were lucky that the weather was good so that we could get out every day, but not everyone is so lucky.
