Dear All Wow! The Faroe Islands did not fail to impress. After recently writing my blog entry on my first few days on this amazing archipelago, I realised what an amazing time I had had there. But there was more in store for me, and this second and final blog entry on my time there aims to relate my adventures for a further four days that I spent on these incredible islands. I really enjoyed the second half of my week there, the scenery remained stunning, the experiences unique, and the people just as lovely. There are many joys of teaching in an international school. The one that I recently enjoyed, was visiting the homeland of a colleague's partner. Traveling is wondrous regardless, but there is a different quality to it when you are being hosted by someone in the know. We set off bright and early from Copenhagen for a quick two hour flight. Even the locals were glued to the windows upon landing, as we were treated to a clear sunny day, and therefore spectacular views. This airport is known for tricky landings, due to fog and wind, so our uneventful arrival seemed a great start to the adventure. Vanochtend een fikse wandeling gemaakt naar de top van de berg bij Gjogv. Sommige stukken zijn zo steil dat er een trap is gemaakt. De verkoudheid speelt ons parten maar we komen er toch. Het uitzicht is fenomenaal. De vogels, voornamelijk meeuwen, nestelen tegen de wanden. Als je er zo op neerkijkt, word je duizelig van de capriolen die ze uithalen. Ook hier hebben we de papegaaiduikers niet gezien. Een beetje onhandig vliegende vogel met een rode bek. De fjorden die we gezien hebben zijn toch weer van een aparte schoonheid. Soms heel weids, soms meer kloofachtig. We boffen met het weer. Zonnig, winderig, met snel voortbewegende wolken die heel aparte schaduweffecten geven. Veel hellingen zijn groen tot diepgroen. Het gebruikelijke ritueel bij de pont. Opstellen in rijen van tientallen auto’s. Wachten. Plotseling allerlei nerveus gedoe. Mannetjes en vrouwtjes met wilde gebaren die je het schip in loodsen. Achterlaten in de 1e versnelling en op de handrem. Gas afgesloten. En plotseling niets meer te doen. Lezen, praten, kaarten, terwijl het schip langzaam een enorme fjord met besneeuwde hellingen uitvaart. Vannacht om drie uur plaatselijke tijd moeten we weer van de boot af. Slapen in 2 etappes. Eerst een paar uur in een hut aan boord. En daarna op de Faroer een paar uur tot de volgende ochtend. Hans heeft trouwens de betekenis van het woord Smyrill, de naam van de ferry, opgezocht. What an awesome get away! This tiny island country is small in size and far flung in location, but large and generous in hospitality and majesty! My dear travel pal, Fred, and I enjoyed 7 days of hiking and exploring the Faroes via foot, rental car, ferry and even helicopter! A well developed infrastructure, including sub-sea tunnels, combined with incredibly friendly locals who often spoke English, made this an easy place to tour. 18 islands comprise this 70 mile x 50 mile set of islands, 7 of which we were fortunate enough to explore. It's been 2 weeks since I returned, and the lingering impressions that find their way into my thoughts and dreams are those of epic scenery, ubiquitous sheep and newborn lambs, and the happy people who reached out to welcome us.
