10 June: IT'S OVERCAST with winds gusting SSW to force 9 and no let-up forecast for tomorrow. Yachts are tucked in at the docks rather than venturing out into a blustery head sea. I decide on an inland route for my bicycle tour, hoping it will be more sheltered there. I take one of the so-called EuroVelo routes -- a paved road with little traffic that suits me just fine (although, later I veer off to thread my way through farmland on a dusty gravel road). I pass farmsteads with the inevitable old stone buildings utilized as a shed, barn or even main building. The island's history dates back more than 6000 years when seal hunters first used Saaremaa as a base. That's pre-bronze age, long before the Egyptian empire! I come across the site of ... read more

9 June: THIS IS A SLEEPY TOWN, quaint and laid back. Not the resort town I expected. I discover a supermarket away from the town square, discretely tucked into a cluster of old buildings, and can't resist buying a smoked herring (prepared the way I used to eat it in my youth) from the fresh fish counter. It tastes even better than I remember -- tender as a rainbow trout. I rent a 24-speed bicycle at Bivarix, a local bicycle shop. Don't ask me why anyone would need that many gears in this flat country! Sure nice, though, to be able to cover a bit more ground in a hurry, rather than hoofing it everywhere. First order of the day is the yacht harbour where I talk to sailors from England and Germany who are heading ... read more

8 June: THE TIME HAS COME for my first break from the cultural journey I am undertaking these six weeks. I'm heading for the island of Saaremaa, a weekend and summer vacation spot for residents of Tallinn. I pack up my belongings, pull the hidden shoulder straps out of the convertible 22-pound carry-on case, attach the smaller backpack and, voila (or whatever the local word is), I'm off on the trolley bus heading for the central bus depot. Only I make a mistake. I end up at the Balti jaam (central train station). A kindly cobbler shop owner tells me to take tram number 2 clear around town to the Autobuusijaam. Well, with all these jaams no wonder a foreigner gets into the sticky. The coach trip to Kuuresaare, the capital of Saaremaa (pop. 16,500), takes ... read more

Early in the morning we left our hostel, backpacks on, as we made our way out of Old Town to the #2 bus stop once again. We had to wait for a bit before the bus came and we ended up having a conversation with an Estonian man who claimed to be an ex sharp shooter and was quite clearly drunk. He wished us farewell with a God Bless America as we boarded the bus. I actually managed to sleep a bit on the way to Kuressaare, waking up shortly before we boarded the ferry. The ride wasn't very long, but it allowed us to stretch our legs a bit before we had to hop back on the bus. After buying bus tickets for the following day, we followed our hostels directions (it was actually a ... read more

Geo: 58.2534, 22.4892I had some trouble sleeping last night - I was coughing and wheezing all night long, and couldn't really breathe. Perhaps my body is breaking down now that I'm 30! Mary Moment #22: Mary screamed in the middle of the night, scaring the crap out of me. And when I started screaming "Mary, what's going on???", she wouldn't answer me. Probably having nightmares about traveling with me ... Breakfast was included at the guest house - pretty standard stuff for this part of the world. There was a Spanish soap opera playing on TV. Telenovelas are so cheesy! But they also have Spanish hotties, so I'm not complaining. We set off to find another car rental agency and managed to get a car. Saaremaa isn't a very big island - we drove around the ... read more

Geo: 58.2534, 22.4892Today I turn 30 ... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well, what do you do? At least I'm turning 30 while doing what I love to do. And I must admit that celebrating a birthday in Europe for the 3rd year in a row is pretty cool. I wonder how much longer I can maintain that tradition? Mary Moment #20: A funny thing happened last night. I was in bed, trying to sleep when I heard some loud snoring. I looked around the room - Magda and her boyfriend weren't sleeping yet. The other bunkmate was asleep, but it wasn't him. Perhaps it was coming from another room. It couldn't have been Mary - her light was on and she was lying in bed doing Sudoku puzzles. But then I walked up to take a look ... ... read more
