I had acquired a free ticket through work, to any Finnair destination in Scandinavia. We had originally chosen Oslo and although our tickets were for Oslo, we decided to change to Copenhagen at the last minute. Finnair was more than happy to accept the tickets. I went with a co-worker named Ryan. The journey started out in Indianapolis, early on February 2, 2004. I had worked the night before until 2am so I was tired. We flew American Trans Air flight 102, a 757-200 aircraft, from Indianapolis to New York-LGA and arrived about 10am. We then took the airport bus over to JFK airport where we just sat around until the Finnair flight in the late afternoon. We flew Finnair flight 006, an MD-11 aircraft to Helsinki. The flight was smooth and routine. I was in ... read more

On Saturday Beng and I went out for one last day of expoloration (for me, at least) of Copenhagen. Fist stop was back at the Christianborg Palace to checkout the basment wich contanains pieces of the 2 previous castles and 2 previous palace that haev stood on that point. mad cool, but dark. The weather was perfect, and after another fanatastic sandwich of smoked salmon and avacado we headed to Christianhaven (a neighborhood on the other side of the water) and climbed a church tower with the spiral stairs on the outside of the builidng. A neat twist you could say. I had to go to Christinia, as social expereiment dating from the 1960's where a bunch of hippies were squatters and mad a self suffienct community out of it. Lots of hash being sold on ... read more

woke up to rain. Wait, whats rain? after the shock and novelty wore off i adjusted my plans for the day accordingly.. i guess i should start with yesterday. After swhitching Hostels to one with a comfortable bed, and free breakfast for 10kr less (6.5kr=$1), i hit the town. I walked up and across town, checking out city hall, and Nørrboro. I bought a much needed compression sack and clips for my bag, then spent some hours wandering the botanical gardens, where many danes were lounging in the sun. Then i headed to Rosenborg Slot, one of the castles. The outside was pretty and i really liked the thrones and the crown jewels, but i wasnt to into the rest. There i accidentally found myself walking to the Resistance musuem with a really boring couple from ... read more

Everyone here keeps going about how hot it is, but its so much cooler than italy, and there is a refreshing breeze. the thermometer by parlement only goes up to 30C... haha. i can drink the tap water, get orange juice with ice, a decent tea, and the men dont stare... ahhhh. So after the whole fiasco with getting to brussels, i made my flight to Copenhagen and got here 15 min late. The airport was full of a huge christian group. i grabbed my bag and hit the S-train to town. The S-train was clean, fast and comfortable, a fantastic change after the Rome MetRo. I got to the central station in downtown, grabbed a HUGE daneburger and a cold OJ and headed down to the hotel. For my birthday mom had got me a ... read more

After meeting so many people who had been to the Roskilde festival I was destined to go there. Also and more importantly my friend Lizette lived there. I met Lizette in Xela, Guatemala at the Spanish school. The month or so around the time I had spent in Guatemala had been some of the best times of my life. Lizette was one of the people that made it so good and I was really looking forward to seeing her again. There is always some trepidation when meeting a friend again - especially when it's a friend that you've only known in one set of circumstances and in this case one country. But it was great - we got on really well, which I had known we would all along. So Roskilde, from the tourist perspective. Charming ... read more

I met Anders on the Queen Charlotte track New Zealand and we spent nearly three weeks together, mostly walking the tracks of the South Island, but also Glacier Hikes and Rock Climbing. Anders grew up in Struer Denmark and due to it being the summer before going on to University he was at home working for the summer. I managed to be around for the one weekend he took off from work for most of the summer! It was fantastic to see him again, talked endlessly about our adventures in NZ and planned another visit before I'm 35, to walk the tracks that we missed, Kepler and Milford Sound. Anders introduced me to one of his best friends from home Ole, and on the Friday that Anders had to work Ole introduced me to a new ... read more

Being an experienced and worldly traveller is very useful. The experience I have gained means that I know now how important it is to check for local events when arriving late in a new city, and if necessary prebook accommodation. But being an idiot I don't follow my own advice and just turn up. The Roskilde festival is one of the biggest in Europe, rivalling Glastonbury. I arrived in Copenhagen the same day as most of the festival goers departed Roskilde and made their way back to various countries all over Europe. There was no where to stay. Ok that's an exaggeration, there was one hostel with beds, the "Sleep Inn" a school gymnasium that is converted into a two hundred bed hall in the summer, complete with communal showers. I was lucky to have found ... read more

Today is Saturday 28th June. We have been here for 18 days now, and boy oh boy has it been the hardest 18 days of our lives!!! So, a day in the life of a strawberry picker goes like this... Wake up at 5am! Get up, have something to eat. Put on funny little yellow overalls to protect our clothes from strawberry stains. Walk 5 minutes in the lovely yellow suit to the strawberry field ... the song gets kinda tedious after 10 straight days of this!;o) As we arrive at the field somebody lets a big fart rip and the field explodes with a sea of black birds flying away, the little feckers love strawberries!!! Grab the picking equipment, which consists of a bucket to hold the picking box, then the picking box and then ... read more

So, here we are in Denmark … we've been here a week now and oh my god, how expensive is everything!!! A banana costs 50 pence in the train station and mars bar 90 pence and a can of coke 1 pound 10 pence!!! .. but wait for it ... a kitkat is 1 pound 50 pence!!!!! but we were told to expect that in copenhagen, everywhere else the prices are slightly more than the UK but not too bad, we hope! We got what is called a s-train from copenhagen to solrød strand, and then a bus that runs every hour to Naurbjergvej(go on then say the name!;o) ... it's pronounced ... Now bear, basically, well i think it's like that, haha! And this is where we are staying, on a massive farm with ... read more

What I enjoyed most was the paintings on the square ground, that looked real from afar. It's mad. And the Princess of Denmark was educated at my school! (The one who married the younger prince).... read more
