DAY 20 - WEDNESDAY 8 SEPTEMBER Got up too early and caught the Tube to Heathrow. It?s a lot more accessible and cheaper than Gatwick and the ?2 fare is an absolute bargain. There are two stops, Terminals 1,2 & 3 and Terminal 4, so if you?re catching a flight from Heathrow make sure you know where it?s departing from. For me this marked the second stage of the tour, as I was about to enter a country where unlike New Zealand, USA, Canada, Ireland and England, English was not the dominant language. The flight departed at 8.30am, arriving into Copenhagen at 11am. London is an hour behind Copenhagen so flight time is only an hour and a half. I was met at the airport by Ian Hill, President of the Danish Australian Football League (DAFL). ... read more

Doing the military service is in Sweden - as in many countries - when boys turn into men. When leaving the service it is tradition to go on a trip, to celebrate the fist time of freedom as men or something. Our rather large group of failures is no different. However, getting a large group to steer in the same direction turns out to be an impossible task. So, while others spread out wherever, we form a small group of brave soldiers to invade Copenhagen. This in times when there wasn't even talk of a bridge. Therefore, train and a boat ride it is. Party all night. Yeah! Even our little small group turns out to be problematic to keep together in the (arguably) capital of beer. The first rounds work fine, but as alcohol and ... read more

In October we were done with our flurry of trips so had time to pick up our new Volvo in Copenhagen. It turns out that for those who do not have to pay taxes, the best place to buy a car is where the taxes on cars is the highest. Car companies tend to reduce their base price so that with taxes the car is still affordable, and in Denmark the taxes are very high. Anyway, Linda and I took the Friday night train from Brussels to Copenhagen, sleeping as usual in a couchette. We arrived about 9 am Saturday morning, and the owner of the Volvo dealership met us at the station. Our first stop was to a womens boutique, which just happened to be owned by his wife. Linda admired the blouses...she loves blouses...and ... read more

The departing group of Bob, Andy, Julie, Peta & myself left Earls Court on the Sunday morning at 9am for the start of our big European Kombi trip in very overcast weather. We made it down to the Hastings by 11.30am, where two of the guys from the Sundowner’s trip showed us around their town (famous for the 1066 battle) with its narrow streets, fort on the hill, shingly beach, and entertainment areas on the beachfront. We took in a few ales at a delightful little pub close to the water’s edge and had an entre of cockles and mussels before returning to their place for a late lunch – a magnificent meal of roast pork and veges, followed by rhubarb, before we took our leave around 3pm. We reached Ramsgate around 5pm and grabbed two ... read more

1964 Diary Entry "The next morning we got up and dressed and went down to breakfast. After breakfast we started to pack for that day we were leaving for Copenhagen. At about 11 o'clock we caught a taxi to the airport. When we got there we had our baggage checked and then we went into the flight waiting room. Soon afterwards we were called aboard our S.A.S aircraft. When we got in we fastened our seatbelts and pre-pared for take off. Then we took off. We slowly rose and levelled off. By that time we were well above the clouds so I couldn't see anything. About half an hour later we started to go down. Finally we saw Denmark. Then we landed. At the airport we went through customs and passport control. Then we got a ... read more
