Hi everyone, how's things? Hope everyone had a chance to catch Live8 over the weekend, wherever in the world you happen to be. After Glastonbury, I've made it to Copenhagen to begin my traverse of Scandinavia (and to attend Roskilde festival of course!). I'm kind of excited and yet still have trepidations at the moment as I'm backpacking solo now. I do know I'm being spoilt though as the youth hostel I'm staying at is all shiny and new with lots of cool facilities. I'll let you know how I'm faring after I've been to a few dank and dingy ones. Apart from having super-swish youth hostels for travellers (gee, how was that for a segue??), Copenhagen is actually a really cool place to visit. Copenhagen is very well planned out, clean, safe, they have lots ... read more

What a difference a month of travel makes. Faithful readers will recall that in June, I got "stuck" in Copenhagen's Kastrup airport for several hours and couldn't really come up with anything to do, so wandered aimlessly in the terminal and was annoyed by things like credit cards and postage stamps. A little travel experience and a positive attitude adjustment sure help! This time, I had intentionally scheduled a 5-hour layover to give me time to bop into the city itself and have a beer, at least, before the flight home. First stop: the book shop, to look for a Danish phrasebook in English. They didn't have any, but they did have an English phrasebook in Danish, which is almost as good! So I was able to pick up the aforementioned minimum vocabulary: please and thank ... read more

A short stay for me in the Danish capitol. Due to limited hostel availability, I had to settle for only 2 days here, and sadly almost all of the first day was spent in transit from Amsterdam to here. I didn't do a whole lot of exciting things here, so hopefully the journal won't bore you all too much... My room this time had only 9 beds in it, thank god, but I got the top bunk. These bunks sit 3 beds high and it means that if I roll out of bed, I am falling about 14 feet to the floor, eek! Seems like a good hostel though, and I took an immediate liking to the group of 4 people hanging out in the room, easy going and friendly people. That night we were bored ... read more

The last few days have been hectic. Weve really rushed the last few countires and are now with Jos parents in Poland. Ciopenhagen was nic and Stockholm was fantasic if not extremly expensive. On the way up Swedens coast we saw many wild animals includeing a Moose!! Fantastic. Stockholm is the most beautiful city I have ever seen. From there we took the 17hr ferry across to Talin in Estonia. Tallin is a 14th Century walled city that is gourgeous. We then traveled down to Riga in Latvia and Vilnus in Lithuauina. Then down to Warsawa and now in the South of POland. We got stopped by the copes in Lith for speeding. They were hiden behind a tree and wernt useing the speed gun properly. They were also 10m from the speed change zone. After ... read more

Grüße von Hamburg! Finally! The flight from Seattle to Copenhagen was half-full at best, so I got an aisle-window pair to myself. Pretty sweet. Individual headrest-mounted movie screens are fab except you give up precious footroom for the box of hardware that controls them... so the extra seat was even nicer. All in all an uneventful flight, all 9.5 hours of it. The SAS live forward- and downward-view cameras are cool, and it was interesting how the crew engineered our sleep time to minimize jet lag (made us all close our windows for some artificial night during our all-daylight polar flight). I discovered Danish (and American) Vogons at Copenhagen's Kastrup Airport. It turns out my connecting flight had been cancelled, but it took more than an hour (10 minutes after scheduled departure) for anyone at SAS ... read more

Here I am at Copenhagen's Kastrup airport after a 9-hour flight from Seattle. Our flight on to Hamburg was cancelled, so we had to wait a few hours for the next one. There's plenty to see and do inside the airport, but I was eager to get on with our trip! Copenhagen is really flat. In the Danish language, it is spelled "København". We will get to leave the airport and visit the city on our way home, in one month. Eventually we got to leave for Hamburg. The flight was on a smaller plane and only took an hour. From the air, we could see the huge new bridge that goes from Denmark to Malmö, Sweden! I'm so excited about visiting Europe!... read more

Well, since Rachel and I did our whirlwind tour of Copenhagen on Friday, on Saturday we decided to take a brief trip up north to Helsingor where Kronborg Castle (also known as Hamlet's Castle) is (get it? Helsingor= Shakespeare's Elsinore!). Anyway, my English-major geekiness came into full force as we toured the place, but things like that do happen. But to start, Saturday morning the day looked kind of gray, so Rachel and I got off to a slow start. Not to mention that I was still relatively worn out from the day before, despite at least eight hours' rest. So, we didn't take the bus/train up north until after lunch, but I didn't mind because we were having so much fun anyway and, heck, I was in Denmark! By the time we arrived at Helsingor, ... read more

Hi from Denmark! I arrived here on Thursday afternoon, and so far Rachel (my roomie from USC who came to visit me earlier in Ireland) has taken great care of me. I got a taste of the town Thursday evening (Copenhagen), met her Danish host family (who seem fabulous), and took a walk around the lake in her own town (Birkerød, just outside of Copenhagen, but maybe still considered part of it, I think). Yesterday, we got up nice and early (Rachel had to go to class), and Rachel sent me by train to a harbor town just south of Copenhagen called Køge, which preserves a lot of the architecture and stuff of an old Danish village with timber houses and tiled roofs and an old church and things like that. It was really a neat ... read more
