I promise I will stop crafting alliterative titles for a while, but today’s heading more than fits Copenhagen - it is indeed a complex city. On July 4th, US Independence day, I decided to take full advantage of the gorgeous weather I had been experiencing since I arrived in Denmark (I planned well, as I will explain later) and continued my peripatetic explorations. I spent much of the afternoon weaving in and out of parks, finding Kongens Have (King’s Gardens) particularly beautiful and peaceful (as did many Copenhageners who were soaking up the sun on the lawns). As the sun began to lower - although still a long way from setting - I walked down to the present home of the Danish royal family, the four part Roccoco palace of Amalienborg. There is perhaps no ... read more

And Our Scandinavian Leg Begins When it comes to planning this crazy adventure of ours, we take many things into account before booking the next ten days to two weeks. The most important item taken into account is the interest of the sight. There is no reason to go somewhere if it’s boring or holds no interest to us. Makes sense, no? After this incredibly important item there are many levels of secondary importance. The top item after importance is weather. While many people in the world may opt for hot and sunny places, we tend to shy away from heat. Europe isn’t known for its fabulous air conditioning and wonderful mid level accommodation. The beds are small and the air conditioning is often just below par. These problems add up to a really unfortunate ... read more

I heard of the Danish concept of “hygge”, a word that loosely translates as “coziness”, before arriving in Copenhagen. Although I have only been in this city for two days, I think I am beginning to understand what it means. It is not, as I originally feared, a cutesy idea of comfort or a more insidious complacency, but finding a bit of quiet, alone or with friends, enjoying a good meal and a drink, and the like. Candles come out in the dusky night and people huddle closer to talk intimately with one another. They find a nice lunch spot and enjoy a few smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) and a cold beer. Thus begins my Viking themed voyage. Not with bloody battles and Viking blood feuds, but with coziness. I am going to like hygge. I ... read more

I must say, it was a dreadful couple of days having to wait to get here and I'm pretty exhausted as I type, but Copenhagen is sooooooo cool. As we were landing it looked like we were circling over green islands off the coast of New Zealand or something. The water was so dark and cold and the sky was overcast. I got my luggage fine and changed some USD to kroner for a taxi ride. The taxis here are mercedes-benzes! There aren't any skyscrapers. I think I was expecting a looming castle or clock tower or church steeple or something. The land is pretty flat hence all the biking. Everyone bikes here. The authorites(?) discourage cars and charge a lot if you want to park in the day time. I got to Vestergade 5-7. ... read more

Now we are at Hamburg railway station, about to connect to Hannover - expect to arrive about 11pm. All travelling well, but a bit foot-sore after our day in Copenhagen.. I think a large rain mass is moving across central Europe (there has been flooding in Britain). We managed to avoid it by going north from Oslo when we were in Norway. We had nice weather while Oslo had rain each day we were away. It began to drizzle just before we left Copenhagen and rain was falling on the train windows as we pulled out. ... read more

The gods obviously smiling, the following day dawned cool.....but sunny. Alas, it wasn't to last as we raced the weather up to Aalborg. Shane greeted us at the train station and ferried us out to Blokhus to his soon to be in-laws summer house at the beach. Marion had arrived earlier in the day and was busily working on the wedding cake. The following day Mum and Bruce turned up. Again, Shane shuttled them the 1 hr round trip to the summer house. This pattern continued with Murray & Cynthia and various other trips until we had all gone again a week later to the extent that the poor bugger must have become dizzy with it all. Not to mention his pending nuptials. The summer house was set in a private enclave amongst a pine forest ... read more

We woke and cruised over to the nearby library to use the internet to find where we could go later that day. Josh was supposed to meet Chris in Berlin but was unable to get a hold of him and wasnt sure if he had tickets for the concert that was playing there. Josh also stated that if he was going to go to switzerland again with us he wanted to train through the black forest rather than through munich. We decided to catch a night train to Cologne germany and from there take a train to Freiburg and then a small town further in the black forest from there. We hung with Lulu a bit longer and then hopped a metro to the train station to head off towards Germany. Turns out the train ... read more
