Our stay in Denmark was filled with days of castle hopping. Alicia pretty much took charge, as this was her 'country of choice' on our holiday. Alicia, a fan of Crown Princess Mary, wanted to make sure we squeezed in all possible attractions which involved the Crown Princess. This meant dragging Josh to all the Castles, but I think he enjoyed himself more than he leads on. They were all extremely beautiful and impressive as you can see in the photos. We also spent 1 day in Malmo Sweden, where we spent most of the day relaxing in a beautiful park. On our final day in Denmark, Josh took a day for himself to go on a 3 hour walk around Copenhagen to take many lovely photos of objects and scenery that did not invole palaces. ... read more

I am still becoming increasingly aware of my surroundings. I am glad the bug-eyes me has not disappeared. One thing I realized while here is that money is more common to discuss. My friends in the military tell me how much they make without me asking and the girls on the soccer team tell me their government allowance they receive while in school. I am not sure if they tell me to inform or just because it doesn’t matter, though it doesn’t seem like it does. I really like knowing though because it puts the prices on items into perspective. Students there can make anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 dollars a month just for going to school. I really like the emphasis on getting a good education. Also, it is nice that no one feels ... read more

I am still in this beautiful city of Copenhagen. My family just got back from Syria. My host brother got food poisoning and is really sick. It is really interesting to see how drastically they change their attitude towards him when he is sick. In general, Danes do not baby their children at all. In fact, my host parents told me that they sent their daughter alone on an airplane (at her request) at the age of 5. Eight year olds go to school on the busses or walk by themselves. The children are so well behaved and show an amazing amount of maturity for their age. Of course, Counter Strike is still popular among little boys, and I’ve seen girls play with dolls, but they are still very different from the majority of children I ... read more

Home sweet home. I am still in Copenhagen, learning just as much about myself in one place as I can traveling all over. Funny how that works. Most recently, I realized something SI directors tried to tell me but I didn’t want to believe- I consistently get really excited about an idea or a future project and then have trouble following through on it. The problem is, I want to do so many things that I simply do not have the time and then I just randomly choose what should have a higher priority. There have been three separate things- giving my host family a calendar of my plans for the semester, going to a soccer game with my host brother, and going to Paris with my host sister that I have told each I ... read more

Trip So farMatthew Feben Hey All. After our first experience with the eurail system we managed to find out way to Copenhagen quite easily. It was really a nice train ride through the Swedish counrtyside and the comfort level of the trains was also a lot higher than what i thought it would be. We arrived at the station feeling very very peckish, so after a quick hit of maccas we set about finiding our hostel.......and for the first time on out trip we could truely say that we had been lost. Partly because i had not written down the address of the hostel and because the day that we arrived there happened to be the only day that the information centre was closed. After a quick phone call to the hostel we managed to get ... read more

...."they attacked Copenhagen and confiscated our naval fleet. So, in retaliation we built canal boats and hid them in these canal side sheds...", our guide quipped in perfect english. Christ, only two minutes into the netto boat tour and the Brits are already getting slated. There seemed to be a heavy French contingent on board so I countered their derisory glances with a sickly grin. Looking around, it looks as though it’s all turned out for the best because the ‘canal side sheds’ have now been turned into top spec offices going for over £1m a shot. Around the next corner and a little float towards the land, we saw the much maligned Little Mermaid. All I’d been told about this famous little statue prior to our visit was that it was highly disappointing, barely ... read more

Last night we took one of Copenhagen’s canary yellow buses to visit Steve’s friends, Mads, Mette and their little boy, Lauge, in their apartment in the Norrebro area. They live on the top floor of an apartment block which had stairs narrow and steep like those found in an old ship. I’d read about the Danish love of ‘hygge’ - a sense of cosy wellbeing - and, sure enough, in spite of being a virtual stranger (Steve knew Mads before we had got together but had never met Mette), these lovely people took us into their home and made us feel absolutely at ease. Not least because the conversation soon turned to toilet matters. After I’d sung the praises of the Copenhagen lavs, I realised that I'd struck a nerve. Mads and Mette, it turns ... read more

If you can get the measure of a place by its toilets then Copenhagen is probably the best city in the world, if comfortable ablutions are your thing. There is, from what I can tell, no such thing as a bog standard bog in Copenhagen. Which is good, because so far the Danish love of pickling everything in sight has meant that I've spent a disproportionate amount of time in them. You can visit the Dansk Design Musuem all you like but you only have to visit 'det lille room' to see that the Danes take their design seriously. Everything, down to the quality of the toilet paper has been pondered and hand picked. What I like most about them is that they tend to be a whole room, floor to ceiling. Nothing like their ... read more

I just traveled to Venice, Budapest, and Prague- all three major cities but incredibly different. Venice was beautiful and quite, but the people, like the Italians in Rome, were just not friendly at all. I appreciated the view and the atmosphere at night when things had died down. But after a few days, I was ready to leave. Budapest was amazing. In Rome and Venice, I missed Copenhagen so much. I missed the toilet seats, the people, the atmosphere and welcoming environment. But in Budapest, I was just happy. We had four days in Budapest and spent a couple going to tourists sites- a Van Gogh exhibit in Statue Park and some churches there as well. It had far less people than Rome and, as a result, the people did not detract at all from ... read more
