UPDATED!!!!! Wandering through Prague reminds me of the time I spent in Stockholm, just walking through all the streets looking at the buildings completely amazed that they could be so beautiful. I got quite a lot done today: - Stare Mesto (this is teh old part of town) with its huge square surrounded by some of the abovementioned beautiful buildings. - 20th century art museum: small but confusing - all sorts of little streets got looked at by me - Tyn church - very impressive Gothic church with an unusually lightly painted ceiling and beautiful restored interior - Charles Bridge the best thing about which was the views After a very short, about 5 minute walk, thanks to the location of the ´Old Prague Hostel´ I found myself early in the morning in the Old Square ... read more

This church was by far the most gaudy of the Baroque churches we saw. It is not the same as the church of St. Nicholas in the Old Town Square - this one is in Little Quarter. Apparently the Baroque churches were made this way to attract people to the church after attendance had been low. I was surprised at the number of violent images and statues in the church of various saints "smiting" people. Also, this church is a good illustration of how small the cross and Jesus are in relation to the statues of saints themselves. The minimization of Jesus goes right along with the violent imagery and glorification of the power of the church I think. Regardless of my negativity about the motivation behind the art, it was a very beautiful church and ... read more

Walking tours are very popular in Prague. Guides for each company carry different colored umbrellas to lead their groups. Some of these groups get up to 50 people! We opted for a 2 hour tour of the Old Town Square and the Jewish Quarter and really lucked out with only 2 other people in our group. :) Our guide was a law student who had worked for a summer in Yellowstone and travelled the US by Greyhound bus. She had an excellent knowledge of the city and spoke English very well. We got a great sense of the history of the buildings and the people of Prague. After walking through the Jewish Quarter, we crossed the river and entered into the Wallenstein Garden at the base of Castle hill. What a beautiful garden! It's full of ... read more

As mentioned previously, we stayed right across from the Estates Theater. We noticed signs for a concert of Mozart opera arias and decided to check it out. The concert was in commemoration of the 218th anniversary of the first performance of Don Giovanni at this theater. We had seats in a box in the second balcony with a great view of the stage. The concert consisted of three musicians playing various woodwind instruments and one male and one female opera singer. It only lasted an hour, but it was well worth it! The music was great and whetted my apetite for opera (I've never seen a full length one before). ... read more

Today we decided to tackle the Prague Castle area of town. This is definitely the most touristy and crowded place in the city. We encountered more tourists and tour groups here than at many of the major attractions in Paris. Overall, Prague was full of tourists as levels we would not have expected this late in the season! The currency is more affordable than EU countries, and than Switzerland so we can see how that would make it attractive (1 US dollar = 24.4 Czech crowns). The "Castle" isn't really a castle per se - it's a compound of buildings including churches, the royal palace, gardens, and several museums. St. Vitus's Cathedral was reminiscent of Notre Dame in Paris, with its Gothic architecture and flying buttresses. Disappointingly the palace was closed on this day. At noon, ... read more

Just a quick post on food in Prague... It became kind of a joke this weekend that my meals included "hidden ingredients": - a wheat roll contained golden raisins - a cheese and vegetable sandwich harbored hard boiled eggs between the bread (not visible in the case) - a black forest cake contained cherries disguised in the cream layer - a major ingedient in my beef stroganoff was pickles (unexpected but oddly not bad) * I dislike raisins, hard boiled eggs, and candied cherries!!! In the Old Town Square, several of the outdoor cafes had stands selling delicious "wafers." They are heated on waffle irons, measure about 6 inches in diameter, and come in several flavors including chocolate and cinnamon. Nice afternoon snack! Also found a stand on the street that had inexpensive small pastries with ... read more

We spent our first day in Prague walking around the New Town area and the Old Town Square. We started in St. Wenceslas Square which boasts a large statue of - guess who - in front of the National Museum. We opted not to do the museum since the weather was so nice out. Then we headed down to the Church of St. Ignatius, built in 1665 in the Baroque style. Baroque architechure included lots of gold and adornments which in my understanding was to attract people back to the Catholic Church after the Protestant Reformation. I need to do some research on this, because I do not understand why Jesus is always portrayed by a very small sculpture (usually a crucifix) in the Baroque churches. This was true in Paris as well. There are many ... read more

We took an early morning flight from Zurich to Prague today for a long weekend. It was "The Day of the Republic" which marks the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918 so we were a little worried that shops and attractions would be closed, but everything seemed to be up and running. An acquaintance from Prague set up accommodations for us at a guesthouse near the Castle. However when we checked in, we were met by two ladies who didn't speak English. They called the manager (who does speak English), and he explained the house was full but they would take us to an apartment near the Old Town Square instead. We had no real choice but to agree, so we hopped in a cab with the housekeeper across town. The apartment was in the attic above ... read more

ok, small overwiev about the time in Czech, i am actually a couple days away and try to catch up with my blogging thing. Czech was my first country on the list (if you wanna see the list, forget it) so i went direct -without loosing another (expensive) day in Germany- into it and visited a couple things. First Pilsen where i ended up late at night after 12h or so traveling with that germanrailwaylocaltrainpass thing. Was not the best start. Walked for a long time around to find the local youth hostel - closed for renovation. Stayed in a Hotel. Next Stop was Tabor, the famous City of the hussites. Where quit days there but the city remains impressive, although there isnt much left from the history of the community called tabor, a city build ... read more
