Nancy and I had not given much thought of going to Karlovy Vary until our friends, Mori and Lilly, returned with raving comments about this small Czech city. So, we decided to spend a weekend there. Earlier in the week I bought round trip bus tickets and picked out a hotel. Mirka, do you remember her picture from last year, called the hotel, making reservations for us. I copied a map of the location from the Internet and we were ready.
We got up and ate breakfast in our room. Our bus was to pick us up too early for us to wait for the dining hall to open. When we arrived at the Jeneralka bus stop we were surprised, the bus schedule had changed. Fortunately there was one bus coming in a few minutes that would get us to just the Dejvicke bus stop in time for us to catch the bus to Karlovy Vary. As a matter of fact, the bus arrived two minutes early and we arrived in good time to catch the long distance bus.
A number of people were waiting for the bus. One a family of five climbed aboard and then

They had been under the erroneous assumption that they could buy tickets on the bus. Sadly, for them anyway, tickets had to be purchased ahead. When the bus pulled away from the curb there they stood, looking forlorn.
From Dejvicke the bus went to the airport, the only stop between Dejvicke and Karlovy Vary. The bus was full. Several people got off at the airport and the same number go on, so the trip was a full load for the bus company.
A few minutes before we arrived at the airport Nancy said, "Oh, that little girl is car sick. There across by the window."
I looked and indeed I have seldom seen such misery on the face of a child. The girl looked to be about nine or ten and it took no genius to see that she was absolutely miserable. I had wondered why a few minutes earlier a woman, turned out to be her mother, had gotten up and rummaged in the storage compartment and getting out a plastic bag. Praise God for plastic bags. From the airport to Karlovy Vary the girl put her head in her

If there is any ugly countryside in the Czech Republic we have not found it and we have traveled over a fair portion of this country. Everywhere we have traveled it is beautiful. I am often reminded of the Shenandoah Valley where Nancy and I grew up. The farmland is well tended and appear to yield good crops of soybeans, wheat, other grains and hops. For a long time Nancy and I could not figure out what was growing in the fields that looked like pole beans, but taller. Someone, I do not remember who, told us it is hops. There is a lot of beer brewed in the Czech Republic and thus there is a need for lots of hops.
The bus ride from Prague to Karlovy Vary took about two and a half hours.
This saga will be continued in the next post................
