We are traveling south along Croatia on a ferry in the Adriatic Sea. We took a 2 hour bus from Rovinj to Rijeka. The driver was smoking below a no-smoking sign, so we didn't feel guilty about eating and drinking below the no eating or drinking signs. We then took the ferry. The overnight ferry from Rijeka to Dubrovnik was sold out of private rooms, so we slept on deck. It departed at 8pm and arrived in Dubrovnik at 3pm the next day. Yes, a 19 hour ferry ride. We slept on the floor below a table and read books. It stopped four times along the way as new sets of people came and went. We got some nice pics. Kim said she will be planning the trips in the future. She said she is not ... read more

Rovinj, Istra, Croatia We spent 2 days in Rovinj, Croatia. Nice place. Small and peaceful. Cobblestone streets and a beautiful little harbour. The first night we stayed in a hotel about a mile out of town. I am beginning to see a pattern here in the unwired world. The only hotels online in a place like Rovinj are big monstrous modern aberrations or old world palaces catering to people who are happy spending 250 Euros per night for a place that has no relation to or flavour of the land they are visiting. These hotels might as well be in Miami Beach or in London. There is almost nothing both quaint and close-in for under 200 Euros per night. Since you need to be on the ground to find the unwired places, the pattern works like ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Istria » Opatija August 5th 2009

We passed up on the trip to Pula and decided to take the day to go to Baska on the island of Krk instead. We tried to swim on the way to Opatija in the town of Crikvenica, but drove through the whole beach area and could not find a parking spot. Opatija...was as I expected...pretty lame. The first night was HOT. It might have been the hottest night of sleep I have ever had in my life. I am not sure any of us slept...it was literally that hot. We shopped a bit that first night. The next day we drove to Baska to swim and then had supper in the town of Krk. Krk was ok...we then got back to Opatija right before a huge thunderstorm..which was nice because it cooled it off for ... read more

We left Optija after talking a bit with Davor...and stopped for lunch in Karlovac. We ate at McDonald's and then met Domagoj at the toll area in Zagreb so he could take us to the hotel. We checked in and then went down to Jelacic Square to do some shopping. We also met Domagoj, Martina, Lea and Luka. Domagoj called Drazen Petrovic's mom to see if we could get into his museum since it is closed for the summer and she arranged someone to meet us there. We got a tour of the museum, which was amazing, and we bought a few things from it. It is an amazing place... We then went to eat...we tried to get into Boban's but they didn't have room for 10 of us, so we went to the restaurant at ... read more

We don't have regular internet so are relying on Internet Cafes every couple of days to keep our updates. Cheers Our final morning in Dubrovnik, we walked the walls of the old town, something that can’t be missed for the views and historical perspective (do it early in the morning or in the evening light). We then set out for Split but we were not sure if we would make it there today. Some of the adventure of travel is finding new and wonderful places to stay. With a family of 5 and accommodation being relatively expensive and in short supply, this part of the adventure turned quite quickly into angst (not yet the Worry word) for us as we worked our way up the coast. The Bosnian Border was crossed twice as we traveled across ... read more

This entry is a reflective one about the prevalence of English in Europe these days. Our trip began in the Netherlands where essentially everyone speaks English. As one older Dutch gentleman said to Lenora when she complemented him on his English - "well we have no choice". I recall saying to Lenora that we were spoiled by being in the Netherlands first and that once we arrived in Hungary and Croatia it would be a different story. Well, I was wrong. I teach a course at UNB called Bilingualism and Education and do a module on English as a global language. We read and discuss how English has essentially become the communication tool for speakers of different languages with respect to various countries including China. Nonetheless, I was really taken aback by how many people in ... read more
