DAY 107 We awake in our little surprise stop of Makarska with the wind still blowing but the sun is out and we anticipate another beautiful day along the coast of Croatia. We slept in a little today and get down to breakfast around 9:30. The room is filled with holiday makers and we had to share a table with a couple who did not speak English. The buffet was large and we had a big breakfast. It was not the normal fare for us so it was nice and made the most of it. We left for the bus station and left for Split around 11:30. We have been told by everyone that Split is the most beautiful place and we had to see it. Well, after seeing Split we agree that it is nice ... read more

Check-in; pretty funny. I had 6 girls whom I expected to be total Princess pains in my neck because when they first saw the little Istok, they were appalled. I promised them during my welcome speech that they would love the boat by the end of the tour, but they didn't believe me. Sure enough, by the end of the week, they all wanted to chain themselves to a railing so they didn''t have to leave. The Istok is funny; the small size of it scares people at first, but between the amazing crew, the great food, and the wonderful experience of showering outside (because the bathrooms are far too small to shower inside), they wind up feeling fiercely loyal to it. It's physically the worst of all the boats, and yet it's the only one ... read more

The flight across Europe gave wonderful views of the fields of France and the majestic Alps followed by the beautiful shoreline of the Adriatic. As we descended towards Croatia, the turquoise ocean water outlining the rugged coast gave us a taste of what we were going to experience for the next 3 weeks. Dubrovnik is pretty amazing to fly into at sunset with the scattered village lights dotting the coastline. Dubrovnik itself (population 47,000 - smaller than Maple Ridge) is truly perched on a steep hillside with houses clinging to the rocky shore. Last year, there were over 100,000 tourists in Dubrovnik just in August so you can see why tourism is Croatia’s main industry. It did seem like most of the 100,000 were there at the same time as we were this year. We forsook ... read more

DAY 105 The alarm goes off and it is 7:00 AM, we drag ourselves out of bed and get ready for the bus ride from Kotor Montenegro to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Just ready to leave when Francine asks what time it is because her watch is different than the alarm clock. We don't know at this point so we leave anyway and find out at the bus station that we are an hour early. So we had a time change that Angie did not account for on the alarm clock. But thank heaven we gained the hour and not lost it. The bus was an old one and it was overloaded. We were not able to sit together although did get seats. Fran was up the back row with and chatted with a lovely young couple from ... read more

We finally got to Split and had a couple of good days. I'll let the pictures do the talking. The highlight was taking a trip up the bell tower with the kids and also getting a picture taken with Toni Kukoc again. I can't believe we ran into him and his kids again. Bacvisce beach was very clean compared to when we were there in 1996. We decided to skip the trip to Trogir. Finally got to Brinje today too...good to see the relatives. Ivana is keeping Abbey busy and Ayden has a new friend named Tomo!!!!!... read more

26 JULY 2009, SUNDAY Got up really early as there seems to be a shortage of shower and toilet facilities in this hostel (appears to be one shower between 12-18 people). I knew I had to check out at 10am so I basically headed straight to the ‘beach’ for an early swim before heading back to the hostel and packing my bags and checking out. When I say “beach” I mean rocks. I did some early morning sun bathing and ended up with indents all over my stomach - was kind of amusing!! Attempted on several occasions to go into the water and even though I was wearing the rock shoes donated by one of the Irish girls, I still only managed to get wet up to my knees - it was just too difficult to ... read more

Slovenia has some of the most beautiful scenery i have seen in Europe. the train rides pass through valleys and mountains. and lake Bled and lake Bohinj are only half an hour from each other but complete opposites. In color and temperature, and surroundings. from lake Bled i went on the Croatia, first to Zagreb which was a nice city, then onto Plitvice lakes national park, which is a Unesco world heritage site, which consists of 16 lakes at different levels with waterfalls between them. The views and hikes are incredible. Then moved on to Split, which is very much a port city. with ferries going out to a lot of the islands. and ships coming in from italy and other countries. from split went on to Hvar which is a very touristy island, but also ... read more

This is my blog from the town of Korcula. On Saturday, we left Dubrovnik and had lunch in Ston. As usual, it was difficult leaving Dubrovnik. Lunch in Ston was great. I had some mussels and then walked to the tower on the walls of Ston with Ayden & Abbey. It was quite a challenge and the heights made me a little more nervous than the kids. On our first day in Korcula, we checked into our apartments and then walked the old town and had supper. Today, the 2nd day, we went to Vela Luka...not much fun...got a parking ticket...looked for the Vlasic family and could not find them...Dad met a new friend and then got another visit to the Church there...you can see the pics with the blog. We had dinner tonight after church ... read more

23 JULY 2009, THURSDAY Woke up incredibly early, well before my 7:30am alarm so had a shower and got some uni stuff in before people started waking up at around 9am. People slowly had showers and ate breakfast (the hostel people didn’t seem to understand that I didn’t want a cup of tea or coffee though!) I had agreed to do the ‘excursion’ which I was told the day before there were four other people doing it. Fair enough. Then the six Irish guys said they were going to do it and so I thought it would be a good sized group - anyway, turns out those other four people had changed their mind so it just ended up being me and them - nice enough guys but still. We left just after 10am (just after ... read more
