A view of the sun setting from our ferry/cruise ship.
I had the most amazing weekend in Croatia.
The long weekend began with an overnight ferry from Ancona, Italy. This was the first cruise I have ever been on in my entire life. (Thank you, Dramamine!) We slept in a small inside cabin without any windows. As I drifted to sleep to the hum of the engines, I wondered what we would see when we woke up in Split, Croatia.
At around 7am, we arrived in our destination, Split. It was an incredible sight to see that early in the morning with the mountains in the distance. We'd arranged to contact a relative of a coworker of mine whose family home is on Vis, which is a small Dalmatian island about 2 hours by ferry from Split. After we wandered around a bit, we grabbed some food from a market near the port. It was our first experience that consisted of two words, a lot of hand gestures and some American embarassment due to our lack of lingual knowledge. But, we managed to get some good fresh food. Later on, we contacted the relative, who we met in the afternoon. He dropped off a key to their family home in Komiza,

which is on the southern side of Vis.
The two-hour ferry brought us to Vis from which a bus delivered ferry passengers to Komiza. As we came over the hill, we could see down to the city. It was just beginning to turn dusk. What a fantastic view! We could barely believe that we were going to spend our weekend there.
The next day, we took an all-day boat excursion to Bisevo island, where we saw the Blue Cave and laid on a beautiful beach for several hours. It was a great way to see more of the area. On our return, I realized that I never wanted to leave this place.
Unfortunately, we did ... and we find ourselves in Siena for the next couple of days. Then, off to Austria!
