The comments on the website when we booked our accommodation at Sv Petar did include someone writing that the traffic noise from the main road was excessive. And they weren’t wrong.!!Had we had an apartment closer to the water it may have been different. The traffic volume did decrease as the evening went on but the cars and trucks seemed to go faster. The settlement we are staying in is in the process of development and as yet there aren’t any traffic signs to slow the speed of the cars and buses passing to and fro on the main road. A bonus here was that we had a frypan and a egg slice so Gretchen could have her favourite poached eggs.Everything went well until it was time to get the eggs out and then the egg slice ... read more

Rovinj - Day 13 (September 4) It was an early start, 6 am to catch the Catamaran ferry to Rijecka which was the largest town we’d seen in Croatia. From here we caught a bus to Pula, where we elected to spend a couple of hours on the way to Rovinj, so we could see the Roman Colosseum here. It was about a 10 minute walk from the bus station where we had stored our luggage. As we rounded a corner a mostly in tact Colloseum towered in front of us. It was the most impressive ruin I’d seen to date, and made up for the ones I was missing by having to leave Italy out of my travels. It was slightly eerie walking around this ampitheatre imagining this stadium as it was used for gladiatorial ... read more

1.The small island of Košljun (near Krk) is located in the Punat Bay, 800 m away from Punat. Its range is slightly bigger than one thousand meters and the vegetation is exuberant. The highest point is at 6 meters above the sea. There are 540 species of plants and mushrooms registered in this area and there are no lizards and snakes on the island. 2.Košljun is dominated by the Franciscan monastery. The world’s smallest Bible is one of the items displayed in the museum. Its surface is one square centimetre. 3.There is a legend on how Košljun came to being - a long time ago this area was not covered with the sea; it was a field owned by brothers and one of those brothers was blind. They worked together on the land. During the division ... read more

1. Apart from the legends about the giants, there are also those about the fairies which are related to Istria. Such is the one about the building of the Arena in Pula . According to the legend, one night, the fairies had decided to build their own town, Divić town, and they carried the stones from Učka throughout the whole night, carefully putting them together. When at dawn the time came to put a roof on the Arena, they were interrupted by a rooster. When it crowed, the fairies ran away so that the people wouldn't see them and that is how the Arena remained roofless. 2. Attila is a name often mentioned in Istrian legends as well as how he had burned many villages with his army. The one about his death, based on his ... read more

Set off from the hostel in Ljubljana at half 5 on Tuesday morning to catch the 6.20am train to Rijeka, which ended up not leaving until about an hour later due to the late arrival of some zombie carriages which needed to join us. As we went off, I fell asleep almost straight away and was woken up at the Slovenian border station by the police. Half an hour after the lengthy process of clearing both border stations we were scaling the Istrian coastline towards the clump of huge cranes and paneláks which sat on the shore. The confusingly named city "Rijeka", confusing as this word in Croatian just means "river" and the only things remotely like rivers in this city are a small canal/wharf and the meditteranean sea. Perhaps it was named in the same ... read more

... read more

We are traveling south along Croatia on a ferry in the Adriatic Sea. We took a 2 hour bus from Rovinj to Rijeka. The driver was smoking below a no-smoking sign, so we didn't feel guilty about eating and drinking below the no eating or drinking signs. We then took the ferry. The overnight ferry from Rijeka to Dubrovnik was sold out of private rooms, so we slept on deck. It departed at 8pm and arrived in Dubrovnik at 3pm the next day. Yes, a 19 hour ferry ride. We slept on the floor below a table and read books. It stopped four times along the way as new sets of people came and went. We got some nice pics. Kim said she will be planning the trips in the future. She said she is not ... read more
