17th October by Blake We stayed in Labin in Croatia. It was really windy and really cold. We didn’t have any electricity at the camp ground. We didn’t have hot showers and no lights in the toilet. There was a straight down hill what we was biking down. I went so fast that I fell off. I didn’t hurt myself. There were heaps of olive trees everywhere. Dad picked some and tasted it. He said it was disgusting. Then we went for a walk to look at the place. We went to a beach I saw two crabs. Mason killed one by accident. We went home after that and Mum and Anton made gnocchi and fudge cake for dinner. We played loser (card game) and I was the champion for most of the game. In the ... read more

After picking up a hungover Conrad (a good mate currently living in London) the night before, we departed early for Croatia. The gang was made up of Mateja, Tina, Marko, Conrand, Paige and myself The first stop were the Postojna caves which were mind boggling though the tour guide was a camera nazi as we weren't allowed to take pictures inside the main section. We took a train ride to get into the cave and then a 40 minute walk with another train ride back out. It was a bit cool so we all had to rug up. Next we hit the Slovenian coast line, all 45kms of it. It was very mediterranean and Paige felt very euro-chic. The boys went exploring and the girls went to the bar... typical. We then headed to our ... read more

Wednesday October 10th We felt surprisingly good this morning and after negotiating with our landlady to leave our bags in the unit we set off to further explore the quaint little town of Rovinj. We took another route to the church of St Euphemia, enjoying the ramble up the narrow streets reminiscent of Venice. After once again enjoying the views from the churchyard we took an alternate route down that took us past the fishing boats unloading their night's catch. We then visited the aquarium, supposedly the oldest scientific aquarium on the Mediterranean coast. This was interesting and as we were the only visitors this morning we enjoyed the view of all the local sea creatures. Arriving at the bus station after collecting our packs we were in plenty of time for the midday bus to ... read more

Yesterday we walked across the street from our hotel and got two beach chairs and an umbrella and laid by the sea. Jon went swimming. We had lunch at the little grill near our beach chairs. Jon ordered a hamburger that was definitely not your traditional American burger. There was some red pepper puree’ sauce, maybe a little vinegar and who knows what else on a huge half loaf of French bread with some beef inside. The bread in Croatia is really soft and so good. We got some gelato and headed back to our hotel for the internet connection and pivo (beer). We had a lovely dinner and spent our last night in Opatija. I hope that we will return for a visit again. The next morning we drove the beautiful Croatian coast in ... read more

I suppose its not all that surprising that when you are away for a month not all your experiences will be highlights, and there is no doubt that our short stay in Pula was the lowlight of our trip so far. The day had started well enough, we had decided to leave Rab Island early, mainly because the weather had taken a turn for the worse and if we couldn´t spend the day swimming there was not a lot else to do there. The drive back to Pula took us along the coast providing spectacular views of the towns below and the islands that seem to surround the coastline of Croatia. The decision to go to Pula was largely on the back of Matt's tip that there was some great Roman ruins there similar to ... read more

After Returning from Belgrade, Polona and I drove to Croatia where we stayed for the Slovenian Holiday. The Adriatic was a little cold but that didnt stop us from taking a swim. We made some delicious mushroom soup and spent out mornings drinking coffee at different cafes overlooking the harbour and the adriatic sea. TGiven the May Holiday (5 days off for Slovenes and honorary Slovenes ) here were a lot of festivities and live music, including the famous Oliver Dragojevic. There is a little pair of islands of the coast that are accessible by boat and have great swimming. The boat to Crveni Otok (Red Island) has a number of departures per day providing transport to the Hotel Istra, a high class hotel on the Island. Red Island is connected to Maskin Island, which ... read more

Geo: 44.8236, 13.9119After breakfast this morning, I packed my bag, knowing that this will be one of the last times I will be packing my bag. I said goodbye to Etta, Pero and Nada. Eva and Sime drove me to the bus station. Was sad to be leaving, it was really relaxing being here and great to settle down for a little while. I have promised that next time I come I will be able to speak Croatian- I have a few years to learn. We had a drink at one of the many bars there while we waited for my bus to arrive. This was going to be a long journey and I wasn't looking forward to it. I thought I would have been able to catch a ferry, but no, the bus it is. ... read more
