My first year in Tanzania flew right by, and suddenly I found myself hosting my last few visitors and heading out of town for my summer holidays! Herein I'll briefly update you on the end of my school year and my travels between then and now. You might want to make yourself comfortable... My penultimate visitor of the school year was non-other than my sister, Kim. She came just when her courses ended, before her summer courses in Mombasa, Kenya began. She was looking for some R&R and I was more than happy to provide it! Kim spent her days sleeping in, reading, playing with Kibo, etc. She got to come to a puppy class, see me in action at weekly Karaoke night at the Irish Bar, meet some of my friends, and go to the ... read more

No words or pictures can even come close to describing a fascimile of the beautiful region we are in. Split, in southern Croatia, is by far the most beautiful place I (Leah) have seen yet. It feels a little bit like a ritzy American resort city, but we only paid $20 for our OWN apartment last night. The extent of our activities is lying on the beach and swimming in the purely aquamarine waters of the Adriatic. To put it simply: This is the *%#&*&! life. Although I resemble a slightly overgrown lobster, this is by far one of my favorite places here. Last night, for some reason (we think it is some sort of independence celebration) there was a huge stage set up with live music and free food being given out and people everywhere ... read more

Some entertaining reverse cultural things for you: - I keep forgetting to look at my gas gauge on my car. I swear Im going to run out of gas one day. - Movie Theaters don't have reserved seats here - Debit Cards. I forgot completely about them. - Tips and Tax. It's hard to have to add money to a bill - English. Everyone speaks it but I keep listening into random people's conversations on the street because I forget I'm not in Germany. SO. Onto the next part of the adventure... We arrived, exactly one hour late (due to our door in the wagon being stuck open all night) in Split, Croatia at the train station. We were greeted immediately by locals trying to rent out their rooms for the night. A hostel had been ... read more

Here are the notes Dalmatian Coast I bolted down the hill to the Internet in Dubrovnik in 13 minutes, loaded up the photos of Dubrovnik and bolted back to the house in 12.5 minutes as a surrogate for skating training. The bus arrived at 12:00 and we took off for the wharf and loaded our gear on board the MY Atlantica at 12.15, then walked up and down the wharfs looking at the other yachts and the cruisers until lunch was to be served on board at 2.00 pm. On Pirate boat looked as if it had flown in from Never-Never land. The Atlantica is a fine looking yacht with a wide aft filled with white towelling-covered, body length lounges; the whole deck is covered with a white sail to protect you from the sun. It ... read more

a lazy week in split. what can i say we really didn't do to much, laying low cos we are spending a week sailing the Croatian islands for a week... we have spent a lot of time lazing on the marina drinking wine and sunning ourselves on the beach. we did get a little local culture into us though... we have watched a lot of soccer and we did a walk under Diocletian's palace and walked up the church tower topped off with heaps of window shopping... I've only bought two pairs of earrings! pretty good by my standards! we have also tried new foods - shock horror i know! it was called pasticata a local Croatian dish with red meat and gnocci, quite tasty! oh and i should add, damo went for a midnight wander... ... read more

Well, I had said that I wanted to sail on my birthday this year and it’s true, you should be careful what you wish for! We had only spent 1 full day on the boat and had stayed in on the Sunday night, because we couldn’t face blowing up the dinghy and rowing to shore so I should have awoken refreshed and revitalised. Not so, I dragged myself out of bed at 7am following my second terrible nights sleep and Col and I prepared the boat down below (which basically means getting breakfast ready) before getting ourselves sorted for the day... sailing gloves... check, cap...check, factor 50 suncream... check and all this despite the fact it wasn’t even sunny. We set off at 8.30am and ended up sitting in drizzle with no wind for about 4 ... read more

So! I've been lax again with the blog and as always it bites me in the ass. Remembering what I've done each day, organising it, etc. Here we go. On friday we left Sarajevo after a nice stay there enjoying the old town. Our last day we went to see Tunel 3A. This is a tunnel that the Bosnians dug during the siege, under the UN-controlled airport and to free Bosnian territory outside of Sarajevo. It was a real lifeline for the people there-supplies, food, ammunition, everything came through there. They showed us a video with a bunch of war footage-bombs going off, shells hitting buildings, buildings collapsing, etc. I'm not sure what the purpose of that was but when I got back to town, it was pretty crazy to think that where I was standing ... read more

WK1 - Hello Croatia! Hi all, Col reporting from Croatia - apologies for the delay in getting this blog up and running, we’ve had a few issues getting decent internet access, but we’re sorted now! Well, had a nice relaxed start to the trip, stayed in the Yotel! At Gatwick airport - can recommend it, compact “space age” cabin rooms, but right in the heart of the airport. Bags checked in the evening before, so a nice stroll through security with hand luggage only, an uneventful flight, and 2.5hrs later we’re in Split. Our transfer is waiting for us, so onto Apartment Ruza, where we are staying for a week before we get out on the water for our sailing course the following Saturday. The apartment was really nice, balcony with a view of the Adriatic ... read more

On our third day in Croatia we decided to try Antonio’s in Kastel Stari for dinner and I ordered the Vegetarian Pizza, more out of curiosity than anything else as in the description it said “Tomatoes, Cheese, Vegetables, Olives”. Little did I realise that I would be presented with the best Veggie Pizza in the world... ever! The vegetables? Peas, Carrots and Potatoes! It was like an Irish Stew pizza! I can only imagine the panic in the kitchen when my order came through... “Vegetables? All we’ve got are mushrooms, onions and peppers (these were the veggies on Col’s Meaty pizza), look in the pantry - there must be some tinned veg back there... here we go, we’ve got potatoes, peas and carrots, they’re all vegetables, they’ll be fine!” And if I’m honest, they were more ... read more

Some of the crew had signed up to do rafting early in the morning. Nic and I were quite glad that we had made the decision not to as we were a tad seedy. We had a bit of a sleep in and strolled down to the beach and munched on crisps for breakfast. Shawn and Ami were there too and had opted for an ice-cream breakfast. When everyone was back we set off for Split our final destination. We stopped off for a swim and jumped off the roof a fair bit seeing as it was to be our last swim whilst onboard the Mlini. When back on board someone started talking about the Australian movie ‘The Castle’ this prompted quote upon quote, of course including ‘How’s the serenity’ (You must watch this movie if ... read more
